Mikko Rantanen, Stars catch Bruins in third period, shoot past in overtime as road trip ends with a loss
DALLAS — Mikko Rantanen scored his third goal of the game — an overtime power-play strike — to give the Stars a 3-2 win over the Bruins on Tuesday night at American Airlines Arena. The Bruins collected 7 of 8 possible points on their 11-day road trip, which included a sweep of the California leg. Matt Poitras got the Bruins on the board first when he one-timed Frederic Brunet’s circle-to-circle feed to the top corner over Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger’s blocker side. It was Poitras’s fourth goal of the season as he continues to thrive in his fourth-line center role. The Poitras tally was the highlight of Boston’s best first period of the marathon trip. Rantanen flipped a doorstep rebound past Jeremy Swayman (22 saves) early in the second to tie it. The Bruins goalie made the original save, but as he tried to glove the rebound, Jason Robertson dislodged it and Rantanen pounced. James Hagens, who narrowly missed a chance in the first period, cashed in in the second. Casey Mittelstadt sped around the Dallas defense and behind net before tossing the puck out front where Hagens tipped it home past Oettinger (18 saves).
