Paris Students Shut Down the Louvre

Artist Rosana Paulino makes a self-portrait of Brazil, protests in France and Colombia, and this month’s edition of Beer With a Painter. “Brazil is a country that has never really looked at itself,” artist Rosana Paulino — one of the nation’s representatives at this year’s Venice Biennale — tells curator and researcher Daniela Mayer in an interview today. So Paulino sets herself to the task, coopting the European form of the illustrated naturalist album — “images made by foreigners for foreigners” — to represent the experience of Black Brazilian women. All the world over, art is a flashpoint for political struggle. In Paris, art students block the entrance of the Louvre to protest France’s overcrowded and underresourced schools, Staff Repoter Anna Lee writes. In Colombia, artists are out on the streets, fighting back against the right-wing president's removal of artworks by women and LGBTQ+ artists from the national museum, Senior Editor Valentina Di Liscia reports. And a new film reviewed by Greta Rainbow laments Iranian authorities’ search and seizure of an archive lovingly assembled by painter and conceptual artist Nasser Bakhshi in Tabriz.

Monster Mia review – kooky kid discovers school of beastly besties in wholesome Halloween fun

In films, twins are usually written as either identical personalities or complete and total opposites, and it’s the latter dynamic that’s at work in this pre-teen animation. One twin is a popular straight-A student heavily invested in fitting in and doing well at ballet, while her sister Mia is a chaotic kook. They both live in Primrose, an appropriately named community that apparently used to be infested with monsters, but can now claim to be proudly monster-free for the last 500 years. The twins’ parents are supportive of their golden child and try their best to understand Mia too, but it is easier for them to praise the kid bringing home the perfect behaviour reports than the one exasperating her teachers with her determination to discover monsters, by hook or by crook. Scrappy Mia is, naturally, the protagonist of this film, and it’s not too long before she finds herself accidentally enrolled in Rotwood Academy, a school for monsters who would be shocked to discover a human in their midst; from their point of view, humans are brutal, cold-blooded creatures, best avoided, who prefer – ugh! – cupcakes to grave-worms.

Conceived in collaboration with chef Dalad Kambhu and We Are Ona founder Luca Pronzato, the installation places cooking and social interaction at the center of the architectural experience.
