This week’s new and streaming TV: Connie Britton in ‘Phony,’ Hudson Williams in ‘Yaga’

Your TV GPS, a look at the week ahead in television, appears every Monday morning on BostonGlobe.com. Today’s column covers Oct. 19-25. As he recovers from an accident, a teenage boy (Sam Nivola, son of Boston native Alessandro) becomes convinced that his mother (Connie Britton) has been replaced by a lookalike in “Phony,” out Tuesday on Hulu. The trailer is worth a watch to see how they’re making Britton look just slightly different when she shows up as the alleged double. A couple of TV veterans bring their skills to bear on the new sitcom “Newlyweds,” out Friday at 8:30 p.m. on NBC, streaming the next day on Peacock. Téa Leoni and Tim Daly star as a duo who impulsively get married soon after meeting each other, and then try to see if their relationship works. Jamie Lee Curtis costars as his ex. The cute in-joke here is that Daly and Leoni are married in real life … but were partnered for many years before they tied the knot, unlike their characters. Comedian Maria Bamford gets the documentary treatment from co-directors Judd Apatow and Neil Berkeley in “Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story,” out Friday on Netflix.

Laura Benanti’s solo show has a title that’s probably not true

Laura Benanti is not a big star. Suggest otherwise and she will laugh as she denies it, even as she acknowledges the generosity of the suggestion and her own luck. Even so, as an accomplished Broadway performer (with five Tony nominations and one win), an actor in acclaimed movies such as “Tick, Tick… Boom!” and “No Hard Feelings,” and a familiar presence on television — from “The Sound of Music Live!” to recurring roles on “The Gilded Age” and “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” the latter as the definitive Melania Trump in many people’s hearts — she drew the attention of audiobook and podcast outlet Audible, which suggested she create a show for its Audible Originals series. She initially jumped at the opportunity. Then came the pandemic and a sinking feeling: “I don’t know if a middle-aged white lady is the voice people are clamoring for right now,” recalled Benanti on a video call from her New Jersey home as her two young daughters puttered around the room. “I just kind of stopped writing it, and then they called and were like, ‘Remember when we paid you and you didn’t do it?’ So then I had to write it for real. And as I was writing it, I just kept thinking, Nobody cares.
