Pineapple Express explained: What it is and why El Niño mattersThe "Pineapple Express" is a tropical moisture plume that runs from near Hawaii to the West Coast — one of the biggest rainmakers California gets all winter. Meteorologists call it an atmospheric river. Firehose is more like it.(MORE: What's an atmospheric river?) The blueprintThe setup is straightforward: a low parked in the trough of the jet stream offshore, high pressure over the Four Corners, and the two working together to steer Pacific moisture straight into California, Oregon or Washington. It moves fast like a conveyor belt. What isn't straightforward is what happens when a Super El Niño gets involved — and there have only been two of those on record. Super El Niño adds fuelEl Niño tilts the odds toward a wetter, more active Pacific storm track. What it doesn't do is decide where the water lands. Chimpanzees steal less pineapple from their friends - Popular Science

A group of chimpanzees feeding together in a natural forest environment on Ngamba Island, Uganda. How likely is a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) to steal food from another chimp? It depends on whether they’re a friend or a foe. A team of biologists discovered that chimps pilfer less from their friends, and that the relationship between the victim and the thief influenced the emotional display of both parties. The findings are described in a study recently published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior.

Nor' easter to bring coastal flooding, winds to East Coast

An October nor'easter is developing in the Atlantic, where it will bring high surf, rip currents, coastal flooding, winds and rain to parts of the East Coast for several days this week. The National Hurricane Center has it highlighted as an area to watch this week for potential subtropical development. However, regardless of development, this system will bring dangerous conditions to the East Coast this week. Fortunately, this system doesn't look to be as strong as the one in September. But the bad news? It could linger for much of the week, so impacts could have a longer duration than you would think. There are currently coastal flood alerts across parts of coastal North Carolina and Virginia, where anywhere from 1 to 4 feet of inundation is possible. Key takeawaysWe do not expect this storm to be as strong as the late September nor'easter. The area most likely impacted the longest appears to be from the Delmarva Peninsula to eastern North Carolina, with more models pointing to primarily eastern North Carolina.
