An ever-changing collection of commentary by Montrealers or about Montreal politics and culture.

“The biggest lie in Canadian politics is that the mainstream media is ‘left-wing.’ Conservative-backed, U. S. hedge-fund-owned outlets dominate Canadian news and endorse the CPC election after election. The media isn’t biased against Pierre Poilievre — it tried to get him elected.”

Quebecers’ rights are under attack. Why aren’t we more worried?

We’re living in challenging, anxiety-inducing times. Cost-of-living issues, homelessness, healthcare shortages, housing affordability, child-care access, a struggling education system and a shortage of qualified teachers, Trump’s tariffs and their effects on Quebec’s economy, a possible third referendum. These are some of the hot-button issues keeping Quebecers up right now. With the world a bit of a chaotic mess, urgent, bread-and-butter concerns have been prioritized. Given what’s at stake, I can’t even fault Quebecers for not noticing that our individual and collective rights have really taken a beating lately. Most people are just laser-focused on making ends meet. In the meantime, inequalities deepen, social services weaken and food-bank lines grow longer, while those in power — completely failing to address these long-standing systemic issues — point the finger away from themselves. Tent cities don’t just materialize out of thin air.
