Non-profit asks Nova Scotians to ‘adopt’ a bat as part of conservation efforts
A Nova Scotia non-profit is asking people to “adopt” a bat in a bid to educate Maritimers about a rare species, while supporting bat conservation. The Nature Trust of Nova Scotia has launched the Adopt a Tri-coloured Bat initiative, in support of one of the smallest bat species in North America. The winged mammals only weigh about the weight of a Toonie but play a big role in the region’s ecosystems. “They’re a keystone species,” said Lucas Greville, a Mount Allison University professor and bat researcher. “They’re going to be eating and taking care of a lot of moths, beetles, general pests. So they’re something we really want to have around.”Maritime bat populations were devastated by white-nose syndrome in the early 2010s. The white fungus grows on the bats’ muzzles, wings, and ears during hibernation. The syndrome constantly wakes bats up during hibernation and depletes their resources. Water main break floods street, at least 6 homes on Northwest Side, prompts boil water advisory
CHICAGO (WLS) -- A water main break on Chicago's Northwest Side flooded at least six homes overnight, leaving residents with water-filled basements and raising questions about responsibility as construction work was underway on nearby sewer and water infrastructure. Home video recorded shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday showed water slowly covering Newland Avenue near Grace Street. Residents were later seen outside speaking with a contractor as water continued flowing from the ruptured pipe into the early morning hours. ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watchIn one exchange captured on video, a homeowner asked, "Who do we talk to about our flooded basements? "Another person responded, "We cannot shut the main down. We can't turn the water off because Bridge Elementary is on here. "Residents said the flooding continued for hours before city crews arrived. "No one showed up. Water all over. And then, this morning, I came down to my basement and it was flooded; almost like three-feet of water," said homeowner Ruberto Barrera, whose home was among those affected. Barrera lives on Newland Avenue, where at least six homes were flooded.
