Father arrested after 4-year-old fatally shoots himself in face in South Texas, sheriff's office says

Child KilledThe child allegedly found the unsecured handgun in his father's vehicle. Watch Eyewitness News and ABC13 originals around the clockSunday, October 18, 2026 8:25PMCAMERON COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A family is mourning, and a father is facing a felony charge after a 4-year-old died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in South Texas, according to the Cameron County Sheriff's Office. The accidental shooting happened on Oct. 1 when the child's parents entered a store and left him inside the family's car by himself, the sheriff's office said in a release. According to investigators, the child's father left an unsecured handgun in the center console of the vehicle. The child then found the gun and accidentally caused it to fire, leading to a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face, the sheriff's office said. Later, investigators were called to the Harlingen Medical Center, and they began investigating how the 4-year-old, who was rushed to the hospital by his parents, ended up shot in the face. The sheriff's office said it pieced together the tragic incident after obtaining statements, reviewing camera footage, and collecting other evidence.

A man's neck was broken in an L.A. County jail. His family is suing the Sheriff's Department

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy working as a guard at Twin Towers Correctional Facility used force against inmate Jeffrey Fairchild, allegedly smashing him face-first into a metal window frame and causing him to fall to the concrete floor, according to federal monitors overseeing conduct by deputies in L. A. County jails. The force of the impact left Fairchild a quadriplegic after the September 2024 incident, his family members said. He was taken to a hospital and remained under close medical care until April 21, 2025, when he suffered a heart attack and died at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach. In the wake of Fairchild’s death, his family members filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles County, Eric Barraza — the deputy who the monitors said used force against Fairchild — and a number of unnamed deputies who were working in the jail that day. The suit, filed in U. S. District Court in Los Angeles, claims that Barraza used excessive and unreasonable force, and that Fairchild’s death from complications stemming from the incident was wrongful.

‘A beautiful dismantling of cynicism’: why Galaxy Quest is my feelgood movie

“By Grabthar’s hammer, by the sons of Worvan … you shall be avenged.”If you have seen Galaxy Quest, those words may bring you close to tears. They mark the moment when Alan Rickman’s character – a Shakespearean luvvie turned sci-fi sidekick – realises that the ludicrous catchphrase he has reluctantly uttered thousands of times does matter after all.1999’s Galaxy Quest is such a good sci-fi parody that it was once voted the seventh best Star Trek film of all time … by Star Trek fans. Its genre send-up is effective and affectionate, with gags about underwritten female characters and illogical spaceship design. It is also a genuinely fun space caper: there’s a properly scary baddie, a spaceship chase sequence, a high-jeopardy mission on a foreign planet and not one but two romantic subplots. There are Beryllium spheres and a rock monster and an Omega-13 (whatever that is). Rickman’s character, Alexander Dane, is one of a group of washed-up actors from a cancelled cult 1980s sci-fi show, now reduced to appearing at fan conventions.
