El Salvador president says bodies found in Haiti are not those of hostages - BBC

Nayib Bukele said the bodies handed to Salvadoran forces in Haiti were "not our men"Four bodies handed over to special forces on a mission to Haiti to recover Salvadoran hostages are "not our men", El Salvador's president has said. Nayib Bukele said a nongovernmental organisation delivered the human remains to one of Haiti's airports claiming they were four El Salvadoran air technicians, but that one of the corpses was a child's and another was wearing a different country's army uniform. He had dispatched a military contingent, reportedly of hundreds of soldiers, on Thursday after the four men vanished after being ambushed by "heavily armed criminal groups". The hostages had been part of the UN-backed Gang Suppression Force (GSF), which is tasked with tackling worsening gang violence in Haiti. The men had been travelling back to their camp in an armoured vehicle when they were attacked in an area of the Caribbean island nation controlled by armed groups called Croix-des-Bouquets. No gang has so far claimed responsibility. Bukele previously said the Salvadoran military operation in Haiti had the sole purpose of returning the four men alive.

Thousands in North West without power and cars wrecked in Storm Boelo - BBC

2 hours agoStewart WhittinghamNorth WestLisa RobertsA tree was uprooted and smashed into Lisa Roberts' car in LancashireStorm Boelo has uprooted trees which have smashed into cars and left tens of thousands of people without powers as it blows across the North West. SP Electricity North West said thousands of homes had been hit by power cuts caused by strong gust of winds, with more than 500 homes affected in Blackpool and 200 in Wigan alone. More than 400 people had to be evacuated from a caravan park near Preston, Lancashire, and a family day race meeting at Merseyside's Aintree racecourse has been cancelled. Grandmother Lisa Roberts said she had been left in tears after a tree fell on her car in Heysham, Lancashire. Roberts told BBC Radio Lancashire: "We had just sat down to watch Strictly - there was a lot of noise outside but you expect that when it's windy. "But suddenly there was an almighty noise and my husband went out and said 'it's a tree - it's landed on the car'. "It smashed through the sunroof and the windscreen. "It's not what we expected on a Saturday night [but] my five-year-old grandson did predict it.
