New Mexico’s governor fired back at President Donald Trump over his latest proposal to rename the Southwestern state. Trump has repeatedly called for renaming New Mexico “New America,” most recently in a Monday afternoon Truth Social post. He claimed in the post that the change would boost local home values and fix what he called the state’s “crooked elections.”“This tired New America bit again?” Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham wrote on X. “You have to ask — what policy failure is Trump trying to distract Americans from this time? “Let me repeat: New Mexico was New Mexico long before the United States existed and we’ll be New Mexico forevermore,” Grisham, a Democrat, continued. “Americans should also know we’ve been busy delivering universal, no cost child care. We’re also the only state that fully replaced health care subsidies that were gutted by Trump and congressional Republicans.”She added that the state’s elections are among the most secure in the country, according to independent experts.

No More ‘Trump Avenue’: Canada’s Capital Moves to Rename Street Amid Tense Trade War - Time Magazine

Ottawa's City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to remove President Donald Trump’s name from a residential street in the Canadian capital amid an increasingly hostile trade war. The motion to rename “Trump Avenue” in the city’s Central Park neighborhood was brought forward by River Ward councillor Riley Brockington on Sept. 9 and swiftly received support from other local officials. “I don't like the idea of anything that's named for Donald Trump, who's demonstrated hostility towards Canada,” Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said at a news conference after the vote. The move symbolizes the strained relations between the two countries, as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney goes head-to-head with the Trump Administration in a trade standoff. Canada’s retaliatory tariffs came into effect on Sept. 8, matching the economic pressure imposed by the U. S. after negotiations collapsed last month. Trump’s repeated threats to annex Canada and his insistence on referring to it as the “51st state” have significantly contributed to the tensions.

Voters said yes to Danielle Smith's questions on immigration. Here's what that might mean for Alberta - Toronto Star

A man votes Monday as an Alberta elections employee helps him to slide his paper into the ballot box in Calgary. A majority of Albertans have voted in favour of having more say in immigration and restricting access to health care, education and social services for non-permanent residents in the province. All four immigration-related questions on the ballot garnered more than 50 per cent of the “Yes” votes in Monday’s referendum dealing with potential Albertan independence and immigration and constitutional reform. But experts say the results, while politically charged, tell a more nuanced story about how the province views newcomers, and may change very little in practice.
