Why Manchester City fans boo the Premier League and Champions League anthems - BBC

The cacophony of boos that greet the Premier League and Champions League anthems before kick-off have now become a fixture at the Etihad Stadium. The jeers from Manchester City fans were turned up a notch against Ipswich last Saturday when the side played their first home game since being found guilty of breaching the Premier League's financial rules. "I can't remember a Premier League or Champions League home game where the anthems haven't been booed," City season-ticket holder Dave Wilson told BBC Sport. The pre-match dissatisfaction towards top-flight chiefs can likely be traced back to February 2023, when the 115 charges for breaching the rules were first announced. Later that same year, Everton had 10 points - reduced to six on appeal - deducted after being found to have broken profit and sustainability rules. In their first game back after the sanction, Toffees fans displayed their ire at Goodison Park by loudly booing the league's pre-match anthem as well as holding up red cards with the word 'corrupt' printed underneath the Premier League logo. Though City supporters did not organise a similar display, their anger was clear.

Man Utd: Breaking down their tactics after Bruno Fernandes criticism - BBC

Figure caption, Man Utd humbled by four-goal Como to pile pressure on CarrickByFootball tactics correspondentManchester United captain Bruno Fernandes appeared to question their tactical approach after Wednesday's 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como. "We started off on the wrong foot," the Portuguese said. "They scored very early, [we had] not much pressure on the ball. "It's a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave some space behind, to try and get the ball in the first moment [by] waiting for them, [giving] them the ball. "Sometimes when you give too much of the ball to these teams, they get confidence. They have so many bodies behind the ball, they make you run a lot, people get frustrated. "His quotes are tactically dense so warrant breaking down, but what did Fernandes mean, and does he have a point? Image source, Getty ImagesImage caption, Bruno Fernandes seems to be at odds with Manchester United manager Michael Carrick's tacticsWas Fernandes' analysis accurate? Since Michael Carrick became United manager in January, they have largely defended in a zonal 4-2-4 or 4-4-2 shape that springs into a press in moments.

French teenage rugby player dies after on-field injury - BBC

A 17-year-old amateur rugby player has died after suffering an on-field injury during a match in France. Clea Menier - a back row for Union du Bassin Marmandais - died after what her club said was an "accident" during an under-18s match against Agen Agglo Rugby on Saturday. After receiving medical attention on the field, the teenager was taken to Pellegrin Hospital in Bordeaux, where she died from her injuries. Neither the club nor the French Rugby Federation (FFR) have disclosed the nature of her injury. "It is with immense sadness and indescribable pain that Union du Bassin Marmandais learned of the death of Clea," the club said in a statement, which paid tribute to the emergency services who treated her. "We are also thinking of her loved ones and friends, whose immense pain we share, as well as her team-mates, coaches, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her and sharing their passion for rugby with her. "This is a terrible ordeal for our club. We will get through it together - united, standing in solidarity, and looking after one another. "The FFR said: "This loss has deeply shaken the entire rugby family.
