Coastal flood warning issued as unusually high tides approach Southern California beach communities
Coastal communities across Southern California are preparing for several days of unusually high tides that could flood roads and low-lying properties, erode beaches and disrupt passenger rail service. The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning for the Orange County coast, urging residents to stay alert, be prepared and do what's necessary to protect life and property. The warning begins Sunday morning and lasts through Thursday afternoon. In Los Angeles and Ventura counties, the National Weather Service issued coastal flood advisories for the beaches. Beach parking lots, bike paths and walkways could see flooding, with the highest tides expected Monday through Thursday, with a peak on Tuesday morning. High tides could reach as much as 1½ feet above predicted levels. The greatest concern is during morning high tides, when water could move inland and erode vulnerable beaches. In Newport Beach, the city predicts tides will reach at least 6 feet beginning Monday, and could rise above 8 feet. The National Weather Service warned that low-lying properties, including homes and businesses along the Orange County coast, will be inundated.

Original ‘Dreamgirl’ Jennifer Holliday honored at Boston Arts Academy fundraiser
Jennifer Holliday, the original “Dreamgirl,” performed three songs alongside a backing band filled with Boston Arts Academy alumni during the public high school’s annual HONORS celebration held at MGM Music Hall in Fenway. The Grammy and Tony award winner was honored for her contribution to music at the masquerade ball-themed night that raised $1.8 million for the school Thursday, the Boston Arts Academy Foundation said. The annual celebration raises private dollars to close the 30 percent gap between the amount of public money the school receives and its operating costs, the foundation said in a statement. The academy is the city’s only public high school dedicated to the performing and visual arts. The money helps to buy equipment, enrichment programs, and college scholarships, among other things, the foundation said. Boston Arts Academy students displayed their artworks and also performed at the event, the foundation said. Holliday, the music category’s honoree at the ball, performed “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from “Dreamgirls,” which won her a Grammy, according to the statement.
