A frightened 10-year-old who became separated from his family is back home thanks to quick-thinking MTA police officers and an NYPD officer who helped translate. Wednesday, October 21, 2026 11:43AMNEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- A group of MTA police officers on Staten Island is being recognized as this week's MTA Heroes after helping reunite a lost 10-year-old boy with his family despite a significant language barrier. The incident happened last month near the Jefferson Avenue Staten Island Railway station, where Sgt. Joseph Amato and Officers John Lombardo, Salvatore DiStefano, Gregory Beach and David Ghee-zuh were on patrol when they received a call about a child who had become separated from his family. The officers quickly located the boy, but encountered a challenge: they were unable to communicate with him and determine where he lived. Looking for a way to bridge the language gap, the officers contacted NYPD Officer Fang Jeen Lin, whom they knew spoke Mandarin. Lin spoke with the child by phone and helped gather information about the boy and his family.

Fire at abandoned warehouse threatens historic Staten Island church
The Mount Loretto warehouse was destroyed, but the church was spared. ByEyewitness News Monday, October 19, 2026 6:41PMPLEASANT PLAINS, Staten Island (WABC) -- A fire at an abandoned warehouse threatened a historic church on Staten Island. Flames broke out Saturday just before 6 p.m. on Hylan Boulevard between Sharrot Ave. and Mt. Loretto near the Old Church of St. Joachim and St. Anne. "Upon arrival we immediately had heavy fire throughout the building," said FDNY Chief Kevin Woods. Initially, a 911 caller indicated the church was burning as the building seemed to be surrounded by smoke and flames. The landmark was spared, as were dozens of structures in the area, including two schools and a senior center. It was no small feat given there were strong winds. "Our units did a great job with many of the flying embers, preventing additional structures from going on fire," added Chief Woods. The flames have been put out, but dozens of firefighters remained on scene overnight. There was heavy damage to the structure and the roof of the warehouse collapsed. New findings emerge in Philadelphia home investigation linked to missing and unidentified women; bones found were from animal
PHILADELPHIA -- Investigators searching a property in Philadelphia's Olney neighborhood have determined that bones found last week were animal bones, according to sources. Sources also said that adipocere, a wax-like substance that can form during decomposition, was discovered during the ongoing excavation of the property. "Adipocere is a tissue which can be used to identify a person," said Fabio Oldoni, an associate professor, program director and forensic geneticist at Arcadia University. Oldoni noted that if DNA is significantly degraded, recovering usable genetic evidence can become difficult. Experts noted that adipocere is not unique to human decomposition and can also be found in animals, meaning additional testing will be necessary.
