More than ever before, starting pitchers with high-velocity heaters are dominating the MLB postseason

It’s an annual playoff tradition. Once again, pitchers are unleashing fastballs with a fury never previously seen. The average four-seam fastball in the playoffs this year has flown out of a pitcher’s hands at 96.3 miles per hour — the highest recorded mark in the pitch-tracking era, and nearly 3 m.p.h. above the standard ten years ago in the 2016 playoffs (93.4 mph). Yet while the idea that pitchers are throwing harder and harder and, yes, still harder is now familiar, this year’s velocity numbers come with a twist. For the first time in the Statcast era (2015 to present), starters are throwing harder than relievers. The average four-seamer by starters in this year’s playoffs is 96.4 m.p.h. — slightly above the 96.2 m.p.h. standard of relievers. Not coincidentally, starters have also been more dominant, posting a 3.12 ERA with a 26 percent strikeout rate, compared to a 3.56 ERA and 23 percent strikeout rate by relievers.
