This mighty cry for a goddess to help Earth proves Dickson Mbi is a bold force in dance
Dickson Mbi won an Olivier award for his last major dance piece, Enowate, a result that surprised some of us who saw a talented artist still mastering the craft of choreographing a full-length work. But his new one, Tellus, is a much more sure and expressive work that creates a confident, textured world. Plus, Mbi is now not only a choreographer, but also a composer – a skill he honed during the pandemic – and the score is an essential part of the choreography (there are musicians on stage behind the eight performers), full of haunting melody and emotional pull. The music effectively shapes and enhances the action and speaks with the dance. Rousing … Hannah Joseph (centre) in Tellus by Dickson Mbi at Sadler’s Wells East, London. Photograph: Tristram Kenton/The GuardianTellus is a kind of folk tale about finding hope in a world that’s in environmental turmoil. The gist of the story (you may need to refer to the programme) is of a lost and stumbling central figure, a community struck by fire and drought, and an appeal to a goddess, Mami-Wata, for help.

Jones said he and actor Marj Hogarth, who are renovating a Grade II-listed chapel in Pwllheli, were on tour "and I just thought I ought to really propose to her on Welsh soil". He proposed during their show at the New Theatre in Cardiff, and "the idea is to get married in the main hall some time in May of next year". The ceramicist also said there were a lot of derelict chapels across Wales and "we need to repurpose these buildings and give them a new lease of life". He said Wales had inspired him to get into ceramics, with his mum having had a passion for pottery too. He told BBC Radio Wales that he remembered driving down Welsh country lanes in search of pottery when he was growing up. Jones said he found Capel Salem while "trawling the internet" and he and Hogarth drove up to see it the following day and "fell in love with the place".

“Unbelievable thing to see”: Drone captures never-seen-before footage of penguin chicks plunging 50 feet into Antarctic Ocean - BBC Wildlife Magazine
National Geographic’s wildlife documentary, Secrets of the Penguins, captured unprecedented penguin behaviour – including gripping footage of hordes of Emperor chicks scrambling atop a 50-foot ice shelf, not wanting to be the first to jump into the freezing waters below. As part of the programme’s remarkable two-year filming schedule, a three-person crew, led by Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning Nat Geo Explorer Bertie Gregory, spent 274 days filming on the Ekström Ice Shelf in Antarctica – which is home to a colony of 20,000 emperor penguins.
