When it was announced yesterday that Maple Leafs center John Tavares was out week-to-week, a recall from the minors was expected. That recall is center Vinni Lettieri, who has been recalled from AHL Toronto, per the NHL’s Media Site. Leafs PR has confirmed the Lettieri transaction later.
The 31-year-old is in his second season with the Maple Leafs but has yet to make his first appearance with them. Instead, he has played exclusively with the Marlies as one of their top offensive players while making a one-way salary. He’s off to a strong start to his 2026-27 season, tallying three goals and six assists through his first five appearances to earn this promotion.

FilterToronto Maple LeafsThe Maple Leafs have recalled forward Vinni Lettieri and goaltender Artur Akhtyamov from the AHL's Marlies. Lettieri, 31, has three goals with nine points in five games in the AHL this season. He led the Marlies in playoff scoring in 2025-26 with 11 goals and 26 points in 23 games to help the team capture the Calder Cup. Akhtyamov is 2-1 to start the season with the Marlies while recording an .882 save percentage and 2.94 goals-against average. The 24-year-old made his NHL debut last season, appearing in three games but has yet to pick up his first win in the NHL. He was named Calder Cup MVP after backstopping the Marlies to the AHL title. Head coach Jim Hiller said that Akhtyamov will serve as the backup goaltender the next couple of games with Sergei Bobrovsky getting the start tonight against the San Jose Sharks and Anthony Stolarz starting tomorrow night against Columbus. Bobrovsky, 38, is still searching for his first win at home as a Maple Leaf.
Hanshin Tigers Agree To Post Teruaki Sato - MLB Trade Rumors
The Hanshin Tigers made it official today, announcing that Teruaki Sato will be posted for Major League teams this offseason. The posting has been rumored to be in the works for months, and at least five (and likely many more) MLB clubs have already shown interest in the reigning Central League MVP. Sato’s stock is high enough that MLBTR’s Steve Adams placed him second among all free agents in the September edition of the free agent power rankings, which rank players based on earning potential. Sato is relatively young (turning 28 in March), can play both third base and right field, and he has been arguably the best hitter in Nippon Professional Baseball over the last two seasons. That said, Sato isn’t considered a strong defender at either position, his strikeout and contact rates leave something to be desired, and there is the standard uncertainty over how star NPB players will adjust to Major League Baseball.
