Oak Brook cops defend tech like Flock as it helps ID suspect in deadly mall incident: Inside look

OAK BROOK, Ill. (WLS) -- Oak Brook police say automated license plate reader technology played a key role in identifying and charging a suspect following a deadly shooting at Oak Brook Center mall last month, while critics continue to raise concerns about privacy and potential misuse of the technology. Oak Brook Police Chief Brian Strockis invited ABC7's I-Team inside the department's real-time crime center to demonstrate how the department uses automated license plate readers, or ALPRs, including Flock cameras. ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch"It was very chaotic at the beginning. You know, we didn't know who was involved. We didn't know exactly what happened... And within minutes of the incident, we were able to because of license plate reader technology... and be able to track its movements to where it was going," Strockis said. According to Strockis, the cameras helped investigators secure charges against Chance Jamerson, who is accused of orchestrating an attempted robbery at Oakbrook Center mall that ended with a man dead.

USPS may resume delivery to rebuilt Lahaina homes, if conditions are met - Hawaii Public Radio

As Lahaina residents have been rebuilding their burned homes, many also installed new mailboxes, hoping their home mail delivery would resume. But the U. S. Postal Service has said it considers the rebuilt neighborhoods as new developments, which would get centralized delivery, rather than their former curbside service. That policy has received widespread pushback from Lahaina homeowners and lawmakers, who say fire survivors should, at a minimum, have the same services they did before the fire. Now, the postal service says it may reconsider that policy for Lahaina if certain safety measures are put in place. The information comes in response to a letter Mayor Richard Bissen wrote last month, requesting the USPS restore delivery. The USPS cites that challenges to safely accessing mailboxes in Lahaina are not a new issue. “Prior to August 2023, carriers reported difficulties safely accessing mailboxes from their vehicles, due to excessive street parking and sidewalks that were constructed after curbside mail delivery had been established,” the USPS stated in their letter, dated Oct. 9.
