Wade Rutland provided an update Thursday about the deadly fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta, where he corrected his previous statements about how long the complex investigation might take. The LatestMilitary officials, including Canada's top soldier, provided an update on Thursday on the investigation into the deadly fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta. Four service members were killed in the fire and 27 more remain hospitalized in serious condition. At a separate news conference in Saskatchewan, the parents of one of the victims said they were "shattered" by the loss of their son, a "mischievous … loving" man who was chasing his dream of joining the Armed Forces. The military said an investigation by a board of inquiry will have a broad scope, including whether training policies were appropriate and why a grass fire wasn't assessed as a threat during strong winds.

Christopher Katsarov/The Canadian PressA wildfire that killed four Canadian Forces soldiers at a military base in Wainwright, Alta., on Saturday started on the base’s automatic grenade launcher range, Brigadier-General Vanessa Hanrahan told reporters on Thursday. Brig.-Gen. Hanrahan is the Canadian Forces Provost Marshal, the top solider in charge of Canada’s military police, which is conducting one of three concurrent investigations into the fire. The military is conducting its own board of inquiry, and Alberta’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner is also investigating. At a press conference Thursday afternoon, Brig.-Gen. Hanrahan said her investigation shows the fire started at what’s called the “AGL” range, as part of routine training in that area. The fire initially stayed within what is known as a “permanent danger area” of the range, which prevented firefighters from attacking it directly.
