Touchscreen MacBook: Will Apple's upcoming event contradict Steve Jobs? - The National
Apple's “pro and tell” event will take place next week, and a significant upgrade to the MacBook line-up is likely to be announced – potentially going against something that Steve Jobs once said. News outlets have reported that the technology giant will introduce a MacBook that uses an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display with a touchscreen option. It would be the first MacBook to contain a touchscreen, and the expected debut starkly contrasts with Apple-cofounder Mr Jobs's stance on portable computer touchscreens. “We've done tonnes of user testing on this, and it turns out it doesn't work,” the late Apple chief executive said in 2010 during a product launch event, discussing why trackpads worked well with laptops and touchscreens didn't. “Touch surfaces don't want to be vertical, and it gives a great demo but after a short period of time, you start to fatigue, and after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off. It doesn't work, it's ergonomically terrible.”Apple's current MacBook line-up uses mini-LED displays. But there is a lengthy list of products that have made debuts years after Apple, and even Mr Jobs, dismissed their concepts.

There's only so much you can do in a laptop form factor, but rumors say it will be lighter and possibly a bit thinner than before, which suggests some tweaks to the casing.

Thursday October 15, 2026 12:09 pm PDT by Juli CloverApple is planning to introduce new OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro models on October 27 or October 28, and the machines could launch on Friday, November 6, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said during his latest podcast. Apple retail stores apparently have a "big floor reset" scheduled for the evening of Thursday, November 5, and into Friday, November 6, which Gurman says could be in preparation for the new Macs. The store reset will follow a debut in late October, with Apple planning a creator-focused gathering in Los Angeles to introduce the new products.
