With low numbers, Lexington football forfeits its next two games against Winchester and Arlington
With varsity-eligible players now in the single digits, Lexington has made the difficult decision to forfeit Thursday night’s football game at Middlesex Liberty rival Winchester, as well as the Oct. 30th matchup against Arlington. A decision on the Thanksgiving morning meeting at Concord-Carlisle, in the teams’ 104th meeting, is not final. “This has been a hard day, but there is relief,” said Lexington athletic director Naomi Martin. “We have had honest conversations with the [Middlesex] league on a week by week basis, and we can not put a varsity team on the field this week.” Martin reached out to Winchester AD Wayne Puglisi, as well as Jeff Bowler (Arlington) and Aaron Joncas (Concord-Carlisle). Lexington dropped to 0-6 — and was 7-36 the previous four seasons — after a 62-0 defeat to Reading Thursday night. With its senior night scheduled for this week, Winchester will host Lexington for a sub-varsity game Thursday (5:30 p.m.), and honor the program’s seniors prior to kickoff.
