A closer look at the marijuana health concerns behind Question 8 in Mass.
Editor's Note: This is an excerpt from WBUR's weekly health newsletter, CommonHealth. If you like what you read and want it in your inbox, sign up here. A decade after Massachusetts voted to legalize recreational marijuana, another ballot question this fall seeks to topple what’s since grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry. Question 8 proposes to repeal adult-use marijuana sales and put new limits on individual possession of the drug. (Cannabis for medical use would still be allowed.)My colleague Simón Rios reported a great explainer on the arguments for and against Question 8. But today, I wanted to take a closer look at the health-related arguments fueling much of the debate with a focus on kids, teens and regulations. Let’s start with kids, up to age 12. A study from Massachusetts General Hospital found some worrisome effects of legalization for kids. The researchers compared emergency room visits for “cannabis intoxication or poisoning” in the three years before dispensaries began retail sales to adults in the state and in the three years after. They found that ER visits for children ages 0-5 were more than four times higher after the start of retail sales.

Vote no on Question 8 to keep marijuana sales legal
A decade ago, Massachusetts voters decided to legalize and regulate marijuana use and sales. In 2018, the first commercial pot shops opened. Massachusetts residents have now had eight years to learn about the benefits and drawbacks of legal marijuana sales. This year, voters will be asked on the November ballot whether they want to return to prohibiting retail sales of recreational marijuana. The Globe editorial board urges voters to vote no on Question 8 and keep marijuana sales legal. To be clear, voting to maintain legal marijuana sales is not the same as encouraging marijuana use or denying its harms. Proponents of repeal are primarily physicians and public health experts who have identified serious health risks posed by marijuana use. They rightly point out that as marijuana has become commercialized, products have become more potent, heightening those health risks. Marijuana use has been tied to psychosis, severe vomiting, and a risk of dependence. Driving while impaired can lead to car crashes, while use by young people can harm their brain development and exacerbate mental health problems.

Massive marijuana grow operation uncovered in Bronx apartment during eviction
FORDHAM, The Bronx (WABC) -- A suspected illegal cannabis grow house containing 30 marijuana plants was discovered in a Marion Avenue apartment in the Bronx when a city marshal was carrying out an eviction, according to the New York City Sheriff's Office. Residents of the building said the odor coming from the apartment had been overwhelming for months, with some fearing it posed a safety risk. "Not safe for the building - the whole building gotta be smelling that," one resident said. Another resident said, "I'm thinking that there was a dead corpse here somewhere - when I find out it's a freaking drug lab yo! "Authorities confiscated 30 cannabis plants from the apartment. Neighbors said the operation appeared extensive despite being run out of a small unit. Evelyn Arredondo, who lives next door to the apartment, said she had previously reported concerns about the smell to the Fire Department of New York. "Itch my throat, my eyes and my nose. And just I called the fire department - you know - I said maybe there's gas around but they didn't find nothing," Arredondo said. FDNY crews returned Monday with hazardous materials trucks after the grow operation was discovered.
