American Airlines Brings Seatback Screens and More Premium Seats to Narrowbody Fleet - APEX Media
American Airlines is making one of its largest investments in the onboard experience, announcing plans to install next-generation seatback entertainment screens at every seat across its narrowbody fleet while significantly expanding premium seating. The fleetwide transformation will introduce 4K displays, Bluetooth audio, USB-C charging, and personalized entertainment alongside the airline’s upcoming high-speed Starlink connectivity. American will also increase the share of premium seating on narrowbody departures from approximately 25 percent today to around 40 percent in the coming years. At the center of the transformation is a major change in American’s in-flight entertainment (IFE) strategy. The airline will install seatback screens at every seat on new Airbus and Boeing aircraft delivered beginning in 2028, while existing narrowbody aircraft will receive the technology through a fleetwide retrofit program.

American Airlines to restore seatback screens on US flights - BBC
18 August 2026Francisco VelasquezBusiness reporter , New YorkGetty ImagesAmerican Airlines removed TVs from US domestic flights in 2017. American Airlines wants its flyers to have screens – and not just the ones its passengers bring on board with them. The carrier says it will restore seatback displays across its domestic fleet, reversing a years-long strategy of removing them from most US routes. The company is also adding more premium seats, saying the changes are aimed at improving the travel experience and boosting revenue. American Airlines says the upgrades form part of a wider cabin investment announced this week. Its move follows years of complaints from passengers, who said that relying on personal devices left them with drained batteries, awkward viewing angles, and patchy Wi-Fi. It also comes as US carriers try to steady demand in a cooling market. American Airlines spent much of the past decade phasing out seatback screens from its Boeing 737s and Airbus A320-family jets, arguing that most travellers preferred to stream entertainment on their own devices.

American Airlines Is Reversing Its Bet Against Seatback Screens - Business Insider
American is revamping its seating with more tech and more premium seating options. For years, American Airlines bet that travelers would rather watch in-flight movies on their own phones or tablets. No more. On Tuesday, the airline said it plans to install seatback entertainment screens on around 800 single-aisle jets. New Airbus and Boeing jets with the screens will begin arriving in 2028, with retrofits on its existing planes starting the same year and continuing into the early 2030s. American said the screens will have built-in movies, television shows, games, and music content. They'll also include Bluetooth connectivity, so passengers won't have to rely on those cheap wired headphones handed out before takeoff. The move reverses a strategy American embraced nearly a decade ago, when it began moving away from seatback screens and instead offered entertainment that passengers could stream on their own devices. The company told Business Insider it's adjusting the in-flight entertainment after customer preferences evolved.
