Inter-American Mental Health Week calls for intersectoral action to improve mental health in the Americas - Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)

More than 185 million people live with mental health conditions in the Americas. Addressing the challenge requires action beyond the health sector. Washington, D. C., 6 October 2026 (PAHO) – The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Organization of American States (OAS) are marking Inter-American Mental Health Week 2026 (October 5–9) with a call to strengthen intersectoral action to improve mental health and well-being across the Americas, where more than 185 million people live with a mental health condition. Under the theme “From commitment to action: Advancing mental health through intersectoral action in the Americas,” the Week seeks to mobilize governments, international organizations, civil society organizations and people with lived experience to accelerate the implementation of policies and actions that promote, protect and improve mental health throughout the Region. Mental health remains one of the Region’s major public health challenges, with millions of people continuing to face barriers to accessing quality services and support. “Everyone has the right to the highest attainable standard of health, including mental health.

Corneal biometry changes with 0.01% atropine for myopia control: a randomised controlled trial and case of incidental keratoconus - Nature

We’re sharing this article early to provide faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research. It is citable and carries a permanent DOI. This version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record. All legal disclaimers apply. AbstractChanges in corneal curvature have been reported with low-concentration atropine eyedrops for myopia treatment and have been suggested to play a role in the refractive changes observed during atropine therapy. A case of keratoconus was identified from the Western Australia atropine for the treatment of myopia (WA-ATOM) cohort. We tested the null hypothesis that 0.01% atropine eyedrops produce no change in corneal parameters or ectasia risk compared to placebo. Children with progressive myopia (6–16 years; n = 153) were randomly assigned to receive 0.01% atropine eyedrops or a placebo (2:1 ratio) for 2 years, followed by a 1-year washout. Scheimpflug imaging was performed at baseline, 24-months, and 36-months. Changes in corneal parameters were compared between the treatment and placebo groups using linear mixed models.

Intraoperative intravenous lidocaine for analgesia after oral cancer surgery with free perforator flap reconstruction: a randomised controlled trial - Nature

Intravenous lidocaine is effective in various surgical procedures, but its efficacy in oral cancer surgery is uncertain. We hypothesised that intraoperative intravenous lidocaine infusion can reduce 24-hour postoperative opioid consumption and reduce postoperative pain in patients undergoing oral cancer surgery with free perforator flap reconstruction. In this blinded, randomised, placebo-controlled trial, a total of 64 patients scheduled for elective oral cancer surgery with free perforator flap reconstruction were enrolled and randomly assigned to either the lidocaine group receiving intravenous lidocaine, or the control group receiving normal 0.9% saline. The primary outcome was the cumulative consumption of opioids at the first 24 h postoperatively. Secondary outcomes included the cumulative consumption of opioid drugs intraoperatively within 48 h and 72 h postoperatively, NRS scores at 24, 48, and 72 h postoperatively, lidocaine-related adverse events, incidence of chronic pain and neuropathic pain at 3 months postoperatively. From August 2024 to December 2024, a total of 102 patients were screened for eligibility, 64 patients were included.

Effect of nursing care program on healthy lifestyle behaviours and quality of life in women with endometriosis: a randomised controlled trial - Nature

We’re sharing this article early to provide faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research. It is citable and carries a permanent DOI. This version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record. All legal disclaimers apply. AbstractThis study was conducted to determine the effect of Endometriosis Nursing Care Program (ENCP), developed in line with Health Promotion Model for women with endometriosis, on women's quality of life and healthy lifestyle behaviours. This prospective, single-centre, randomized controlled trial was conducted with 46 women diagnosed with endometriosis who applied to the Endometriosis Outpatient Clinic of a training research hospital. Women with an Endometriosis Health Profile Questionnaire-5 (EHP-5) score ≥ 22 indicating reduced quality of life were included. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group (n = 23) receiving Endometriosis Nursing Care Program (ENCP) or a control group (n = 23) receiving routine care. The ENCP consisted of two individual 60-min sessions delivered two weeks apart. The primary outcome was change in quality of life measured by EHP-5.
