The Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar denied allegations of immigration fraud in a Wednesday appearance on MS Now, her first interview since federal agents raided her residence last week. Those in Donald Trump’s orbit – cabinet officials and rightwing influencers alike – have promoted baseless theories about the Democratic congresswoman, accusing Omar of being in a sham marriage with her brother and fudging details of her immigration paperwork. The brother rumors circulated on a Somali blog, Omar told MS Now host Chris Hayes, before it gained traction with rightwing conspiracy theorists in Minneapolis. She believes the raid was designed to appease Trump loyalists. “They kept alluding to the fact that something was going to happen to me,” Omar told Hayes. “They had to do something, I believe, to say, ‘Hey, look we raided her house.”The 12 October raid marked an escalation of a years-long feud between Omar and Trump. The president has repeatedly denigrated Omar’s character, faith and Somali heritage, most recently on Tuesday, when he called her a “sick, very dishonest person who hates our country” while answering reporters’ questions at the White House.

Obama says Trump administration probe of congresswoman Ilhan Omar is 'so appalling' - BBC

Barack Obama has said congresswoman Ilhan Omar is under federal criminal investigation simply because she's an outspoken critic of the President Donald Trump. "The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president," the former US president wrote on X, calling the probe "so appalling". The White House defended the inquiry, saying the justice department was "focused on restoring law and order". Last week, homeland security agents searched the Minnesota Democrat's Washington DC home as part of an investigation into her immigration status. Born in Somalia, Omar moved to the US with her family as a child. US media outlets have reported that the probe is tied to her American citizenship and whether she lied about her age when she arrived in the US in 1995. Questions have been raised about whether the age listed on Omar's citizenship application differed from her actual birth date. Obama said in his X post on Sunday that her father became a naturalised citizen when she was 17, and not yet legally an adult, which then gave her citizenship.

‘So appalling’: Obama rebukes Trump over Rep. Ilhan Omar investigation - MS NOW

Former President Barack Obama issued a rare statement Sunday rebuking the Trump administration for targeting the president’s political enemies, namely for launching a federal investigation into Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. “It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say,” Obama said in a lengthy statement shared on social media. “But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.”

Trump ‘border czar’ says Ilhan Omar could be ‘of course’ denaturalized and deported - The Guardian

Former US president Barack Obama condemned comments by Donald Trump’s “border czar” that the Republican presidential administration could “of course” strip Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar of her citizenship and deport her. Obama wrote Sunday morning, on X, that “the full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president”. He urged all Americans to defend Omar, regardless of their political beliefs, adding: “if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her – or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.” Obama, too, has had his citizenship scrutinized by Trump, who more than a decade ago fueled false conspiracy theories that Obama was born in Kenya and therefore not eligible to be president. Tom Homan, Trump’s “border czar”, was asked on Saturday by a Fox News host whether the investigation into Omar could involve “denaturalizing and then deporting her”, Homan answered: “Of course.”“If you lie during the naturalization process, there is a process to denaturalize somebody,” Homan said. “We’ve done it before.
