Mark Carney and Doug Ford pledge billions to help Ontario steel and auto industries - Toronto Star
Steel workers work at the ArcelorMittal Dofasco steel plant in Hamilton, Ont., on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. OTTAWA — The federal and Ontario governments have rolled out an $8.7 billion aid package for beleaguered steel and auto industries hurt by U. S. President Donald Trump’s trade war and pledged to accelerate development of the long-promised “Ring of Fire” critical minerals project. As first reported by the Star, Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Doug Ford announced Ottawa and the province would share the cost of what they dubbed a new “action plan” to buffer the effects of U. S. tariffs on the steel and auto sectors, and also to inject money to advance development of the critical minerals sector.
