GLP-1s are linked to lower psychiatric hospitalizations: study - TradingView

Patients with schizophrenia and type 2 diabetes on GLP-1 receptor agonists were less likely to require acute psychiatric care, such as hospital visits, compared with those using other diabetes drugs such as DPP-4 or SGLT2 inhibitors, according to a new peer-reviewed study. The study published on Wednesday in the Lancet Psychiatry journal was based on electronic health record data representing more than 70,200 adults with schizophrenia and T2D who were receiving diabetes therapy between Jan. 1, 2018, and Oct. 1, 2025According to its authors, patients on GLP-1 agonists had a 24% lower risk of undergoing psychiatric hospitalizations compared with those who were not treated for diabetes and an 18% and 17% lower risk compared with those who were on DPP-4 and SGLT2 inhibitors, respectively. Lead investigator Najmeh Davoodian, an associate research fellow at Deakin University in Australia, said that the results marked the first to show a connection between schizophrenia hospitalizations and GLP-1s, a popular drug class marketed by Novo Nordisk NVO and Lilly LLY.

GLP-1 Drugs Cut Psychiatric Hospital Admissions For Schizophrenia By 24%: Study - KFF Health News

The study, published Wednesday, was the first to link powerful obesity and diabetes medicine with a reduced likelihood of schizophrenia hospitalization, Bloomberg reported. One of the authors of the study hypothesized that better metabolic health might support “psychiatric stability.” People with schizophrenia who were also taking GLP-1 drugs for diabetes had fewer psychiatric relapses in a large study of US health records, indicating another potential benefit from the medicines. The patients on GLP-1s were 24% less likely to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital than people not taking the drugs, researchers said, and 29% less likely to go to the emergency room for a mental health crisis. They were also less likely to be admitted than those who took other types of diabetes medicine, according to the study published Wednesday in the Lancet Psychiatry journal. (Kresge, 10/14)

RFK Jr outlines expansive vision for collecting US health data at Maha event - The Guardian

Robert F Kennedy Jr laid out an expansive vision for collecting, sharing and analyzing US health information at a Maha event hosted by a close ally and outspoken anti-vaccine activist. Medical and lifestyle data, from doctor’s visits to exercise, should be connected and shared with the government and independent researchers, where it can be searched by AI – including potential links between vaccines and health outcomes including autism and mortality, suggested Kennedy, the secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and a longtime vaccine skeptic. “We need to use America’s health data to determine whether the food we eat, the chemicals we encounter, the vaccines that we’re administering, the other environmental and lifestyle exposures are contributing in one way or another to the chronic disease epidemic,” Kennedy said at an event with the Maha Institute on Monday, with about two dozen people tuning into the live stream. The Maha Institute is headed by Mark Gorton, who called himself “the boldest anti-vaxxer in the anti-vax conference” two weeks ago.
