“Help me! Help me! My arm is f— broken, it f— hurts!” screams a Long Beach man as he is pinned, face down in a gutter, and handcuffed by ICE agents. Videos of the detention, which took place Saturday in a residential area in north Long Beach, have sparked outrage over the tactics employed by federal immigration agents and the lack of answers from the Department of Homeland Security over the operation itself. DHS did not respond to The Times’ request for comment Monday. Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson said he was outraged by the recordings and had spoken to the injured man, Ricardo Gonzalez, who is a former longtime city employee. “Ricardo is a dad. He just wants his kids to feel safe. He shouldn’t have to worry about being injured, being hit by a car, whether he’s U. S. citizen or not,” said Richardson. “His kids should not have to see their parent detained.” Gonzalez told Richardson that he is a U. S. citizen. According to the mayor, Gonzalez had made a 911 call Saturday requesting de-escalation support from police after he saw a group of unmarked vehicles and a crowd gathering in his neighborhood.

To save democracy, we need online anonymity
But at the same time, an even more foundational threat to privacy has blossomed: The death of internet anonymity is looming, bringing with it severe implications for our free speech rights. And no one seems to want to stop it. In the United States, the Trump administration is seeking to unmask people who have engaged in the proud national pastime handed down by our Founding Fathers: talking trash about the powerful. Government agents are demanding the ability to identify their anonymous critics online and off as well as threatening protesters in Maine and other states with a supposed database to track protesters. As one federal agent told an observer in Portland while he photographed her license plate, “We have a nice little database, and now you’re considered a domestic terrorist.” Meanwhile, expanded ICE surveillance offices in places such as Vermont hoover up data from social media to broaden enforcement efforts. (The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, where I work, is suing to obtain records about the alleged database of protesters.)
