What eyewitness accounts tell us about the science of memory - Scientific American
Human memory is, at its core, an unreliable witness. More than 70 percent of all convictions of people who were exonerated with DNA evidence between 1989 and 2019 were cases of mistaken eyewitness identification. Meanwhile decades of research shows that memories can easily be warped each time they’re recalled—a truth that suggests eyewitness accounts should be taken with enormous grains of salt. But it might not be so simple: new studies are bringing nuance to whether and how eyewitness testimony should be used. Memory is malleable, and even worse, humans are terrible at knowing whether their memories are reliable. Nevertheless, memory can be reliable evidence: It is “like any other piece of forensic evidence,” says Laura Mickes, a memory researcher at the University of Bristol in England. “If it’s contaminated, it’s not going to be good.”Malleable MemoryOn supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. Pink in the City marks 20 years fighting breast cancer in Quebec alongside the MUHC Foundation
A Quebec-based non-profit organization dedicated to breast cancer awareness and treatment is celebrating its 20th anniversary. In 2006, Denise Vourtzoumis’s 11-year-old son, Lawrence, shaved his head in support of women facing breast cancer. That simple gesture inspired a movement that continues to change lives 20 years later. The MUHC Foundation has been proud to partner with Denise and Pink in the City since 2014. Over the past twelve years, they have contributed $1,949 million through the Foundation to support the MUHC Breast Clinic Wellness Program, helping ensure patients receive the care and support they need, treating the whole person and not just the cancer.

Maura Healey has never had a close race, and Mike Minogue sure isn’t giving her one
The closing stretch of this race has been horrendous for Team Minogue in general. Last weekend, Minogue’s running mate, Shawn Oliver, was charged with operating under the influence, after allegedly driving into five parked cars in New Bedford Sunday morning. Minogue quickly called on Oliver, who was arraigned Monday, to suspend his campaign for lieutenant governor, and Oliver complied. But “suspended” is a pretty empty term in this case. As Minogue surely knows, Oliver’s name is on the November ballot and isn’t coming off. Sure, he can stop campaigning. But did he ever start? Minogue declared on Monday that under no circumstances would Oliver ever serve as his lieutenant governor. He pointed out that Massachusetts went without a second-in -command before, most recently when Tim Murray left the Deval Patrick administration in 2013. Then, as now, the state had no process for replacing a lieutenant governor. But I’m not sure Minogue should be spending a lot of time worrying about top-level staffing, given the state of the race. In theory, this race should be more competitive.

Voters in oil-rich Alberta strongly reject leaving Canada
“It’s a great result for Canada, thrilled that Albertans have chosen unity,” Carney told reporters in Ottawa, Ontario. “They’ve chosen to build together.”Carney’s efforts to promote Canadian unity and lessen Canada’s economic dependence on the United States stem from recent threats by President Trump. Since his second term began, Trump has insulted Canada and its leaders, levied punishing tariffs in an ongoing trade war and repeatedly suggested that the country should be annexed as the 51st US state. Some prominent separatists leaders traveled to Washington three times last year seeking support in meetings with low-level State Department officials. Carney, who was raised in Alberta’s capital, Edmonton, called the referendum a “dangerous bluff.” Carney was governor of the Bank of England when Britain voted to leave the European Union in 2016. He received enthusiastic receptions at two large rallies for those who supported remaining in Canada last week, in Edmonton and Calgary. The referendum reflected the province’s long history of resentment toward the central government but also more recent discontents.
