B.C. families worry about funding for autism, disability services in upcoming election
Families of children with autism and other disabilities want voters to keep program and service funding in mind when they cast their ballot in the upcoming provincial election. In February, the BC NDP announced it was ending the B. C. Autism Funding Program and replacing it with the B. C. Children and Youth Disability Benefit. New Mass General Brigham AI tool estimates biological age, cancer survival from selfies
Within seconds, FaceAge posts the participant’s biological age — an estimate of how old their body appears. Participants can add new images to track how they age over time. Researchers are using the uploaded photos to investigate which lifestyle habits and diseases are associated with looking younger or older. They stressed that the prediction tool is for research, not diagnosis. More than 10,000 people have signed up since the portal launched quietly in March. As the database grows, it will help the team test and improve their algorithms across larger and more diverse groups. Until now, the tool was limited largely to hospital patients. They’re also collaborating with researchers outside Boston to expand FaceAge. The study, which tested whether the AI tool could read health signals from ordinary photographs, was published in The Lancet Digital Health on Monday. The researchers first trained a base model, FAHR-Face, on more than 40 million face images. They then fine-tuned it for two tasks: FaceAge estimates biological age and FaceSurvival predicts survival after cancer treatment.

Murray Hill reveals his ‘Showbiz’ life and its Boston beginnings
The 54-year-old has seen extremes in his personal and professional lives, paths that weaved together and led him to become Murray Hill, which is the main thread of the book. “I identify as a trans man in solidarity with and to support my community,” he writes. “But I would rather not constantly be asked how I identify and what my pronouns are.” When people ask how he identifies, he writes, “I’m just me, Murray.” Before he was Fred Rococo in “Somebody Somewhere” with Bridget Everett or Murray in “Life & Beth” with Amy Schumer, or hosting the “King of Drag” competition show on Revry network, or hosting cabaret shows around the world, he was a student at Boston University trying to figure out who he was. His mother would try to force girly clothes on him, but he never felt feminine, which led to frequent fighting. A Central Illinois local branch of a statewide family group is filling the unique gaps in childcare by sharing critical resources with parents. Birth to Five Illinois helps families with children ages birth to 5 get equal treatment no matter their race, language or social economic background. Kari Clark is the council manager for Region 48, the Peoria County branch. She said the first five years of a child’s life are important because so much development happens during that time. “Ultimately, investing in services now when they’re young can save money overall," Clark said. Clark manages two dedicated staff members. They oversee an action council, comprised of community members and parent and early childhood representatives. It meets monthly to discuss early childhood gaps and needs. It determines local actions that can fill those gaps.
