Their biggest win of the night was limiting the Dream to seven offensive rebounds. Atlanta was 0 for 8 on second-chance shot attempts. The Valkyries thrived all season by limiting possessions and slowing pace, but the Dream play a different version of the same game. During the regular season, Atlanta overwhelmed opponents by generating more shot attempts. The Dream outshot opponents in 36 of 44 games, feeding on offensive rebounds, second-chance points, points off turnovers, and fast-break points. In the series-tying Game 2 win Monday night, Atlanta feasted on all of them. The Dream turned eight offensive rebounds into 17 second-chance points, scored 19 points on the break, and turned Golden State’s uncharacteristic 19 turnovers into 24 points. Instead of the down-to-the wire tension of the series opener, Atlanta’s 79-65 win was essentially over in the fourth quarter. Golden State’s challenge the rest of the series will be turning Atlanta into a one-shot offense. “When things maybe don’t go your way, that’s when you need to ramp [the energy] up even more,” said Valkyries guard and Newton native Veronica Burton.

Angel Reese has 30 points, 16 rebounds as Dream beat Valkyries to even WNBA Finals at 1-1

SAN FRANCISCO — Angel Reese had 30 points and 16 rebounds, Allisha Gray added 18 points and the Atlanta Dream stymied Golden State on both ends in the second half, beating the Valkyries, 79-65, on Monday night to even the best-of-seven WNBA Finals at one game apiece. Rhyne Howard set a Finals record with six steals, while Jordin Canada contributed 13 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds as the Dream earned the franchise’s first Finals victory after going winless in three previous trips — 0-10 overall. They now head home having salvaged a split in front of the boisterous “Ballhalla” crowd at Chase Center. “This environment is tough to play in. Shoutout to the fans. Shoutout my team, though,” Reese said. “We came and fought. I mean, that Game 1 was tough for us. But we moved on.”Reese became the third player with at least 30 points and 15 rebounds in a Finals game, joining Jonquel Jones for Connecticut in 2019 and Breanna Stewart for Seattle in 2020. “She was definitely way more aggressive, she had a great game,” Valkyries center Kiah Stokes said.

Mass. House Democrats reject Healey’s ‘gimmick’ proposal to suspend state gas tax

Healey argued that a two-month gas tax suspension was a “responsible thing to do” amid a surge in gas prices driven by the war in Iran. A gallon of regular gas cost, on average, $4.26 in Massachusetts as of Tuesday, according to AAA; that’s more than a dollar higher than this time a year ago. But the idea immediately received a cool reception on Beacon Hill, where Democratic lawmakers have blocked attempts to suspend the tax before. State Representative Aaron Michlewitz, a North End Democrat who chairs the House’s budget-writing committee, said he is still “very skeptical” that a gas tax suspension would provide “any real savings to folks that are struggling with the affordability crisis that we’re facing.”“I would call it a gimmick policy, and it sounds nice,” Michlewitz said. “But it’s not something that is going to actually, when you get down to the mechanics of it ... provide real savings.”Spokespeople for Healey and Minogue did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

Military safety rules urged early-morning training before deadly Wainwright fire

The Canadian military’s safety rules identify October as a high-risk month for grass fires at CFB Wainwright and recommend holding live-fire exercises early in the morning to minimize the risk of igniting a blaze, according to a document obtained by Global News. The details are contained in the military’s current Range Standing Orders for CFB Wainwright and raise new questions about the safety precautions in place before Saturday’s deadly blaze, which killed four Canadian soldiers and injured 39 others. The tragedy unfolded at about 4 p.m., amidst yellow alert warnings from Environment Canada about high winds, and as a forecasted cold front approached the base. The 139-page document also states that units conducting live-fire exercises between August and October should plan to shoot early in the morning, when fire danger is “normally low enough to permit the firing of most ammunition natures before approximately 1000 hrs.” Story continues below advertisement
