‘Less magical thinking’: Kreiss-Tomkins says Alaska needs new revenue measures. Republicans disagree. - Anchorage Daily News

Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins speaks during a forum for candidates for governor at the Alaska Hospital and Healthcare Association annual conference at the Alyeska Hotel in Girdwood on September 16, 2026. (Marc Lester / ADN) Alaskans are hurting at the pump, with prices for gas and heating fuel driven up by the war in Iran. The state treasury, on the other hand, is benefiting. “The next governor is, for worse or better, walking into a relatively privileged position where there’s a meaningful projected surplus because of the cost of oil,” said Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, a Democratic candidate for governor. Kreiss-Tomkins, a former state lawmaker from Sitka, is the only candidate in the race who has promised he would introduce a balanced budget — one that does not rely on state savings — if elected. The war in Iran, and the ensuing increase in the price of North Slope crude, could make that promise easier to fulfill. If oil prices remain higher than projected through the fiscal year that began in July, the state could have hundreds of millions of dollars — and potentially over $1 billion — in surplus revenue as leaders begin crafting the next budget.

MIRROR-FINISH ACRYLIC PANELS CONCEAL pavilion IN GUADALAJARADesigned by errre taller, Sfumato is a temporary reflective pavilion that reinterprets the Cubo MEM, a prominent sculptural landmark at the ITESO architecture complex in Guadalajara, Mexico. Selected as the winning proposal for the inaugural Pabellón MEM competition, the project investigates how an existing architectural structure can become visually imperceptible while maintaining its physical footprint.all images ©errre tallerCONCEALED STEEL FRAMING FORMS MONOLITHIC SKYWARD PAVILIONThe intervention by studio errre taller wraps the 6.40 × 6.40-meter cube in a reflective envelope composed of 3 mm mirror-finish acrylic panels. The standard 1.22 × 2.44-meter sheets are combined with 76 cm cut sections to maximize material efficiency while maintaining surface continuity. The panels are attached using double-sided tape and silicone to a light-gauge metal stud-and-track framing system supported by an interior wooden sub-structure fixed to the original PTR steel frame. To preserve the illusion of a monolithic volume, a single access portal is positioned discreetly on the less prominent west face.
