‘Clayface’ turns the Batman villain’s origin into an underwhelming horror story

The new “Clayface” movie serves as an origin story set well before the events of “Creature Commandos.” And although the majority of the film takes place in a Gotham City, it’s another version of the Caped Crusader’s hometown, different from the one that appears in “The Batman” movie starring Robert Pattinson (which takes place in its own, separate cinematic universe that also includes “The Penguin” show. Got all that?). Get Starting PointA guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter EmailConfusing comicbook movie/background lore aside, “Clayface” thankfully doesn’t require any previous viewing before diving in, although it’s a bit of a shame that it’s not tied to Matt Reeves’s Batman universe (Reeves is attached to “Clayface” as a producer, though). The film could’ve benefited from the grittier and more grounded tone of those projects. Instead, what audiences are treated to is a B-movie body horror tale devoid of superhero flair (Batman hasn’t been fully introduced in Gunn’s big-screen universe yet — don’t expect to see him here) that’s severely lacking in the scares department. Bombers need victory to punch their playoff ticket

TORONTO – Vernon Adams Jr. and the Calgary Stampeders will be B. C. Lions fans this weekend. Calgary (9-9) finishes its regular season on a bye week after downing B. C. 32-13 on Saturday. But the Lions will play a key role in determining the Stampeders’ playoff fate. Calgary is currently third in the West Division. Although the Stampeders are tied with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-8) in points, they get the higher spot based on claiming the season series. But right behind both teams are the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-9). Saskatchewan and Winnipeg each have one regular-season game left to play. Winnipeg faces B. C. (10-7) in Vancouver on Friday night, needing a win to clinch a post-season berth and end Calgary’s season. But a Lions’ victory would put the Stampeders into the playoffs. Great leaf-peeping weather ahead this weekend as autumn sunshine abounds

This weekend will be another very nice October weekend featuring nearly wall-to-wall sunshine and seasonably cool or mild temperatures, depending on your perspective, with little frost. Technically, this is the final full weekend of October because next weekend, Halloween falls on a Saturday and then Sunday begins November. There’s been a big storm out in the ocean this week that will be long gone by Friday as we begin the weekend and high pressure builds in from Canada. This time of year, an air mass with high pressure up north is often chilly and temperatures will be a little bit below average on Friday, staying mostly in the low 50s. The forecast morning low temperature across Boston for the next week. Boston GlobeSaturday: Plenty of sunshine, calmer windsThere will be plenty of sunshine both days this weekend and the wind will be generally quite light. Because high pressure will be cresting near or over New England, the gradient will be almost non-existent and that’s one of the reasons for calmer winds. Something called “warm air advection,” which is basically what it sounds like, when warm air starts moving into an area, is going to start taking overon Saturday.
