As Canada pivots from the US, a city reclaims its past - The Christian Science Monitor

Once an economic hinge connecting a young Canada from east to west, Thunder Bay is again finding itself at the center of a national effort to strengthen the country’s economic independence. As head of the local Chamber of Commerce, Charla Robinson attends her share of ribbon cuttings and mundane company announcements in Thunder Bay, a Canadian city of more than 100,000 on the western shore of Lake Superior. But at one such event in September, she cried. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had come to the Alstom manufacturing plant on the edge of town to announce a new deal: Thunder Bay would be part of a national project to build a new fleet of Canadian passenger railcars. For more than 20 years, Ms. Robinson had been pushing, in one form or another, for a Canadian-built rail project at the sprawling plant, one that manufactured Hawker Hurricane fighter planes during World War II. Now, thanks in part to a rupture between Canada and the United States, she will finally see it happen. “The surprise was we’re building it in Canada, all the way through. That was like, holy smokes. We’re finally doing it,” she says. “Properly.”There is something fitting about that happening here.

Twenty-Seven Soldiers Remain in Hospital as Three Investigations Begin into Fatal CFB Wainwright Fire - VOCM

The Military gave an update last night on the tragedy at CFB Wainwright in which a fire resulted in the deaths of four soldiers. The fire occurred late Saturday afternoon local time. Twenty-seven soldiers remain in hospital – 13 in critical condition. Many “burn nurses” from Ontario are in or on the way to Wainwright to help treat the victims. Acute Care Alberta is asking reporters not to go to hospitals, and to respect the privacy of the patients and their families. As for the cause, there is no indication that the natural gas infrastructure had anything to do with the fire. The fire originated as a result of a training exercise on the anti-grenade launching range. There are three investigations talking place – two by the military and one by a civilian agency. The military now says the investigation that it is in charge of will take a long, long time.

Adrian Wyld/The Canadian PressPrime Minister Mark Carney says there is no merit to allegations from Donald Trump’s administration that Canada is interfering in U. S. elections. “I’m disappointed that their envoy sees that it’s his role to make these suggestions,” he said of U. S. ambassador Pete Hoekstra during a news conference in Istanbul on Friday. The United States embassy in Canada this week circulated what it called a “fact sheet” that accused Ottawa of trying to sway U. S. politics. American voters are preparing to cast ballots in tight midterm elections that will turn on a small number of closely fought races. U. S. embassy accuses Canadian politicians of election meddling“The Canadian government brushes off concerns about potential interference in U. S. elections, even as its ministers and premiers openly describe plans to influence American politics in official documents and public appearances,” the U. S. embassy statement alleges. Mr.
