Bangladesh in grips of world's worst measles outbreak, with 1,000 dead in last 6 months - CBC

Bangladesh, which once came close to eliminating measles, is facing its worst outbreak on record, with around 1,000 suspected and confirmed measles-related deaths reported since March, as hospitals struggle with overcrowding, shortages and a continuing influx of sick children. The South Asian country is currently experiencing the biggest measles outbreak in the world, according to a list on the U. S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, recording more than 57,000 cases between January and June. But the numbers may be far higher than that, according to Bangladesh's Health Ministry. Since the outbreak emerged in March, Bangladesh has recorded more than 166,000 suspected measles cases, including 19,835 laboratory-confirmed infections, according to Health Ministry data. The outbreak has been linked to 999 deaths, including 100 confirmed measles fatalities, while more than 146,000 suspected patients have been hospitalized. A mother holds her measles-infected child, who is being treated with oxygen, at Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute in Dhaka on Sept. 3.

Woman at centre of Cornell University rape inquiry in 'constant fear', lawyer says - BBC

The life of a woman who filed a lawsuit alleging she was drugged and raped at a Cornell University fraternity house has been completely upended, her lawyer has said. Speaking to the BBC ahead of a hearing in the civil case on Friday in New York, her lawyer Thomas Giuffra said: "She feels under fire. "The woman, known anonymously as Jane Doe, is suing her former school and the fraternity over the alleged incident involving several men at the Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024. When the case went viral, a series of "I am Jane Doe" solidarity posts appeared, but there was a separate campaign aimed at unmasking her and defending the men, who have all denied any wrongdoing. The men, who are also being sued by the woman, have not been charged with any crimes. Getty Images"I am Jane Doe" placards were seen being held during a rally in Manhattan against sexual violence on 8 OctoberWith initial proceedings now under way in the civil case, Giuffra told the BBC that these last few weeks have been "a very hard time" for his client, who isn't doing a lot beyond "surviving". Her decision to sue was rooted in a desire for closure and to take power back, he said.
