‘Coyote vs. Acme,’ Viewed as Unreleasable by Warner Bros., Just Beat a Jacob Elordi and Ridley Scott Movie at the Box Office - IndieWire
“Coyote vs. Acme,” a hybrid of animation and live action once deemed unreleasable, edged out an $80 million Jacob Elordi sci-fi adventure at the box office this weekend. It caps a stunning revival for the animated film, which Warner Bros. shelved to use as a $30 million tax write-off before finally relenting and selling it to a little-known indie distributor, Ketchup Entertainment. Bolstered by an online rescue effort and strong reviews, “Coyote vs. Acme” debuted to $15.4 million, topping “The Dog Stars,” a $70 million Elordi vehicle that was directed by the legendary Ridley Scott. Despite its pedigree, “The Dog Stars” opened to just $8 million domestically for a fifth-place finish. It’s a huge bomb for Disney and 20th Century and one of the worst financial failures of Scott’s otherwise glittering career.
