The Stoughton police dispatcher who told Matthew Farwell that Sandra Birchmore’s friend had called the department reporting their sexual relations is expected to take the witness stand Tuesday in Farwell’s trial in federal court. James Fitton, who still works for the town but in a different department, is listed among a number of potential witnesses Tuesday including an expert who would testify about how Farwell allegedly began grooming Birchmore, when she was a teenager in a poice Explorers youth program. Meanwhile, an FBI agent who investigated Birchmore’s death remained on the stand for the third day in a row, facing lengthy cross examination Tuesday morning about her jarring testimony. Special Agent Heidi Kelsch has spent hours in court reading aloud text exchanges between Birchmore and Farwell including discussions about a child, her threats to expose their relationship to his wife, and recollections of sexual encounters that began when Birchmore was too young to give consent. Farwell, 40, is on trial on charges that he killed Birchmore and her unborn baby, and staged Birchmore’s death to look like a suicide.

FBI agent who investigated Sandra Birchmore’s death to resume testimony in Matthew Farwell’s trial

The Globe has been unable in multiple past attempts to reach Pickard for comment. His name has appeared in legal arguments before, but this is the first time he was identified as the father of Birchmore’s child in front of the jury in Farwell’s trial. He is listed as a potential witness. Farwell, a former Stoughton police officer, is accused of killing Birchmore weeks after learning she was pregnant, and then staging the scene to look like a suicide. Prosecutors allege he killed her to cover up their relationship and his history of sexually abusing her, beginning when she was 15. His lawyers argue Birchmore killed herself after Farwell sought to end their relationship, pointing to Birchmore’s history of mental illness. According to Kelsch’s testimony Monday, Farwell did not respond to Birchmore’s December 2020 text message for several hours. During that time, Birchmore told at least eight other people about her pregnancy, Kelsch said. When Farwell finally responded, he wrote, “I literally have nothing to say right now,” according to messages read aloud in federal court as Farwell’s trial entered its second week. Birchmore, 23, was found dead in her Canton apartment on Feb. 4, 2021.

Prior to Birchmore's death she was excited about her pregnancy, friend says in murder trial

A friend said Sandra Birchmore was overjoyed about her pregnancy and never mentioned suicide during testimony Thursday in a trial against a former Stoughton detective accused of killing her. It’s part of the federal case that challenges the state’s initial finding that Birchmore killed herself in her Canton apartment. Matthew Farwell, 40, is accused of strangling Birchmore, who was 23 and 8 to 10 weeks pregnant, in February 2021 and staging her death to look like a suicide. Lesley Davis, 30, told jurors that Birchmore was “so happy” about being pregnant and had asked Davis to be the baby’s godmother. She also testified that Birchmore said Farwell shoved her to the ground when she asked if he would sign the birth certificate, and that he denied he was the father. Days after Birchmore’s death, Davis said, she went to Canton police and urged them to investigate Farwell. Farwell has pleaded not guilty, and his defense team has argued that Birchmore killed herself because she was upset that Farwell ended their relationship. DNA testing later excluded him as the father.
