Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season Two once again sees Studio Trigger handle animation duties, and this time, the anime powerhouse has gotten even wilder with its depiction of Night City and its residents. While the first season was bold in its visual direction, director Kai Ikarashi has pushed it even further, using more abstract shapes and experimental animation techniques to capture the look and feel of a cutting-edge dystopia. What does that lead to? A new season that showrunner Bartosz Sztybor calls a shift from Michael Bay-directed movies to Martin Scorsese-inspired (absolute) cinema. "I think the difference for me is—and I think I once made this reference—visually, the first season was very Michael Bay, while this second season is more like Martin Scorsese," Sztybor said to GameSpot. "He uses shapes and light differently. Even if the backgrounds are the same real places from the game, and Studio Trigger was sometimes using the same assets, the way he recreates them is different. It fits the vibe of the story, which is also very different. It's not this huge emotional thing, but rather something indie, more punkish, and more realistic. Masahiro Sakurai Says Gaming Needs Originality Or It ‘Will Die Slowly’
For the last 16 years at Tokyo Game Show, Masahiro Sakurai has handed out awards centered on game design to celebrate games that do things differently. This year, however, was the final year for this event, and in a new interview, he shared a somewhat bleak reflection on the importance of originality as he discontinued the prize. Sakurai’s Game Designers Award was centered on promoting original game design ideas, regardless of sales performance. Winners of the award, not necessarily limited to a single game each year, have included the original Life Is Strange, Mario Kart: Home Circuit, Viewfinder, and Scribblenauts. However, during his speech at the awards show last month, he painted a somber picture, lamenting, “Though it may sound rather grave, originality doesn’t actually have a strong impact on sales. I think it actually ranks low on the list of priorities for many.” He compared the problem to the way the novelty of a limited-time drink flavor might fade after it’s been released, although he hopes the games industry hosts enough creative minds to avoid this problem.

How Final Fantasy Resonance uses Visions to change how we see the series
With its cinematic HD-2D visuals and flashy combat, Final Fantasy Resonance was already piquing the interest of turn-based RPG fans, but its powerful and fun Visions mechanic has really captured the imagination. I went hands-on with the final game to take a deep dive into what Visions are, how they work, and how they transform main characters Rain and Lasswell’s quest to save their world. If you’re familiar with summons in turn-based RPGs, then that’s a good starting point for Visions – but you’ll get a particular kick out of them if you’re a long-time Final Fantasy fan. As I explored Lapis, I encountered crystal shrines that each welcomed me to engage with a short tale of a hero from previous games in the series.
