WEATHERPowerful surf along Zuma Beach in Malibu is washing away the shoreline, threatening Westward Beach Road and the popular Sunset Restaurant. KABCTuesday, October 20, 2026 2:29PMMALIBU, Calif. (KABC) -- Powerful surf continues to pound Malibu's coast, turning recent storm erosion into an immediate emergency as crews race to fortify the area. Churning waves south of Zuma Beach are washing away the shoreline, raising concerns that a portion of Westward Beach Road could fall into the ocean. The popular Sunset Restaurant, which sits along that road, is also being threatened. Crews are piling giant boulders along the coast to prevent high tide from causing more damage and keep the road from completely collapsing. "The sand is disappearing, definitely... And the ocean is, I mean these waves... I've never seen anything like this after growing up and going to Zuma all the time. I've never seen waves this big. It's crazy," said Sabrina Pender. The erosion has also exposed a water main in the area, prompting water service to be shutoff for the restaurant and some nearby homes. Top StoriesWestward Beach Road is now blocked off for repairs.

Nicolas Cage battles sinkhole that threatened his Malibu home

Staff Writer Oct. 19, 2026 12:50 PM PT As fires and high tides batter Malibu, Nicolas Cage is working to rescue his oceanfront home from a different threat: a sinkhole. The actor has secured four permits to repair damage caused by a massive, expanding sinkhole the opened up Sept. 8 outside his home on Sea Level Drive, city records show. The repair work calls for excavation to retrieve a soil sample, as well as debris removal and sandbags to protect the property from strong waves and coastal erosion. The permits, which cost $3,158 in total, were four of 14 granted to Sea Level Drive residents over the last two months as neighbors try to prevent further damage after high tides and rain from Tropical Storm Marie. After the 25-foot-deep hole swallowed Cage’s driveway, the city of Malibu red-tagged 31 homes on the street, forcing evacuations since the damage blocks the only route in and out of the beach side neighborhood. It’s unclear when those evacuation orders will be lifted. It might be a while. According to Malibu.fm, the original contractor handling the repairs was terminated, and a new contractor came on board in early October.

As Bryson fire reignites trauma in Malibu, neighbors lean on one another

Speculation among Malibu High School students began early Thursday morning. Surely school would be canceled, they told parents — perhaps based more on wish than intel. What are the odds the power was cut? What if a fire broke out? The Santa Ana winds picked up through the afternoon. Gusts slammed into Malibu homes with force. Lights went out across town as Southern California Edison cut power. Around 5 p.m., Watch Duty notifications lit up residents’ screens: A fire had started on the other side of the mountains. The winds were blowing it toward the coast. Volunteers with the Local Brigade were staged in the parking lot of Trancas Country Market along the coast, awaiting orders from the L. A. County Fire Department. A column of thick smoke, made red by the setting sun, rose over the hillside. In a town of fire survivors — where many have lost their home in blazes at least once, if not twice — a quiet, familiar feeling filled the neighborhoods: Here we go again. By Friday morning, it became clear the Bryson fire was not on the verge of becoming another Woolsey or Palisades fire. It nonetheless triggered a flood of trauma and emotions.
