Japanese Tekken Players Are Likening Tekken 6’s Rollback Netcode Mod to Serious Crimes and the Fighting Game Community Is Split

Updated: Oct 19, 2026 7:45pm UTCTwo weeks ago, a Tekken player created a mod that allowed users to play the game online with rollback netcode, sparking a community-wide debate between Western players and competitors based in Japan and Korea. The mod, made by a community member named Ekspym, became an instant hit among Tekken players, reaching more than 10,000 players as of October 17 and a recorded 4,547 downloads as of October 15. According to the mod’s readme, “the package contains neither the PS3 firmware nor the game,” though it acts essentially like an emulator. It sparked a viral conversation regarding the current state of Tekken 8 (with many players seeming to prefer Tekken 6 out of the two games), but perhaps more surprisingly, received massive pushback from players in Japan and Korea. One of the loudest voices speaking out against this mod was celebrated fighting game pro Dogura. “The pirated version of Tekken 6? That thing crosses the line way too much, and I'm horrified that no one overseas is raising negative voices about it,” he wrote in a post on Twitter/X. “When our fundamental values and sense of morality differ this much, we probably can't even have a conversation.

California settles 23andMe data breach claims for US$6M

Published: October 19, 2026 at 5:25p.m. EDTCalifornia Attorney General Rob Bonta on Monday announced the state will receive a US$6 million settlement payment in 23andMe’s bankruptcy, resolving California’s legal claims related to a 2023 data breach that exposed 6.9 million customers’ genetic and other personal information. California had unsuccessfully tried to block the US$305 million sale of 23andMe assets to TTAM Research Institute, a nonprofit controlled by 23andMe co-founder Anne Wojcicki. The state had argued that the bankruptcy sale violated California’s Genetic Information Privacy Act, and it had said consumers did not give express consent to the sale. Once a trailblazer in DNA testing kits, 23andMe filed for bankruptcy in March 2025, seeking to sell its business at auction after a decline in demand and legal fallout from the data breach. A U. S. bankruptcy judge ruled against California’s objections to the sale, and later ruled that the state could not sue to recover money from the bankrupt company’s successor.
