Some molecules have mirror-image forms that differ only in how isotopes of the same element are arranged. Because isotopic substitutions barely change a molecule’s size or shape, conventional methods such as recrystallization and chromatography have generally proved ineffective or impractical for separating them. Chemists have therefore largely had to build the desired form through carefully controlled reactions or start with molecules that already have a defined handedness.
