Bombers need victory to punch their playoff ticket

TORONTO – Vernon Adams Jr. and the Calgary Stampeders will be B. C. Lions fans this weekend. Calgary (9-9) finishes its regular season on a bye week after downing B. C. 32-13 on Saturday. But the Lions will play a key role in determining the Stampeders’ playoff fate. Calgary is currently third in the West Division. Although the Stampeders are tied with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-8) in points, they get the higher spot based on claiming the season series. But right behind both teams are the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-9). Saskatchewan and Winnipeg each have one regular-season game left to play. Winnipeg faces B. C. (10-7) in Vancouver on Friday night, needing a win to clinch a post-season berth and end Calgary’s season. But a Lions’ victory would put the Stampeders into the playoffs. Senator Collins enlists ex-Democratic colleague Joe Manchin in effort to highlight her independence

Manchin said to lose Collins would be “to lose the soul of the Senate.” He praised her independent streak, her willingness to buck Republican President Donald Trump and her record of fighting for Maine’s interests. “This is a true blue-blooded Maine person who knows exactly where she came from,” Manchin said. They planned a stop later a New Balance shoe facility in Norway. Jackson, 58, is scheduled to campaign Thursday in Portland with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the progressive congresswoman from New York. Collins, 73, is in what may be her toughest reelection fight as she seeks her sixth term. It’s only the second time that she’s sought reelection in a midterm with a sitting Republican president, and the national trends are much less favorable to the GOP than they were the last time she did so, in 2002. Trump’s approval has fallen well below where it was when he took office last year, and a recent poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that a strong majority of voters want change in Washington.‘We need more people like Susan Collins’Collins has been working to persuade voters that she is independent of Trump and willing to break with him.

Montreal Children’s Hospital celebrates 35 years with advanced life support machine

A life-support machine that has helped more than 100 critically ill children when their hearts and lungs could no longer function on their own is marking 35 years at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. The machine, called Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), circulates blood outside the body, at which point oxygen is added and carbon dioxide is removed before returning the blood to the patient. This temporarily allows the heart, lungs or both to rest and recover.

She didn’t want anyone to know she was Richard Pryor’s daughter. Then a student said the n-word in class.

For years, Pryor’s scholarship of Black history was completely separate from her identity as daughter to comedian Richard Pryor, one of the most famous and iconic Black figures of the 20th Century, known for his raw, confessional comedy. Then one day in 2010, she realized her professional journey was deeply connected to her long-held desire to understand her dad. It all came down to one messy word: “n—.”A word that is indelible to a conversation about Black racism in America, and a word that Richard Pryor used often on stage, wielding it like a flaming sword, daring mixed-race audiences to get close, but not touch. The collision of Pryor’s private and public lives, and its aftermath, is the focus of her new memoir, “Something We Said: Richard Pryor, A Notorious Word, and Me.”The book, and our interview, starts with an anecdote in 2010, when a white student in Pryor’s class quotes the 1974 movie “Blazing Saddles” during a classroom discussion of the Fugitive Slave Law. The student quoted a line mostly likely penned by Richard Pryor himself, a line rife with humor, irony, and more than one slur, the n-word included. In that one moment, Pryor felt her entire life flash before her.
