RCIPosted: May 22, 2026 2:18 PMRisk to Canadians from both viruses low, Dr. Joss Reimer says, but new screening in place at airports. The LatestCanada's chief public health officer, Dr. Joss Reimer, is giving an update on Ebola and the Andes hantavirus, including actions taken by the Canadian government. Global Affairs Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency are also taking questions. The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has previously said it is not implementing a travel ban or actively testing travellers for Ebola, though Ontario's Health Ministry said a resident who recently travelled to East Africa is being tested for Ebola "out of an abundance of caution. "World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said this morning the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is spreading, prompting the organization to change its risk assessment to very high for the country but still low at the global level. PHAC confirmed a positive case of hantavirus last week in a Canadian isolating in British Columbia after leaving the cruise ship affected by a deadly outbreak. Canadian officials say the risk to the general public is low.

AHMED ZAKOT/The Globe and MailSeparatist leaders affiliated with the Alberta Prosperity Project say the group’s two most prominent members – Jeffrey Rath and Mitch Sylvestre – were fired by the organization six weeks ago, but the news was kept quiet to avoid derailing the referendum campaign. In a Thursday night social-media post, Tanya Clemens said the APP’s board, of which she says she’s a member, had decided in mid-September to remove Mr. Sylvestre and Mr. Rath from their roles with the group “for cause.”“I didn’t want an internal dispute to become the story when we were trying to have such an important conversation with Albertans about their future,” Ms. Clemens said, explaining why they didn’t publicize the news earlier. Ms. Clemens said that there were concerns about who was given access to the APP’s membership database, how the group approached the referendum campaign, and how the two men conducted themselves leading the movement.
