ANKARA/TORONTO -- NATO allies Canada and Turkiye are expected to sign a joint declaration aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation in four areas, including defence and energy, during Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit later this week, a person briefed on the matter said. The declaration is also expected to encompass the economy, looking to advance free trade talks between the countries, while boosting social and diplomatic ties. The countries would establish committees in all of the areas to draft action plans, the person said. Carney’s office and Turkiye’s presidency and Foreign Ministry did not respond to requests for comment. Carney will be the first Canadian prime minister to make a dedicated bilateral visit to Turkiye. He is set to meet with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Thursday and is expected to meet with Turkish business leaders in Istanbul on Friday. The visit is part of Carney’s efforts to reduce trade dependence on the United States and strengthen partnerships with regional powers amid a damaging trade war with Washington and an increasingly adversarial relationship with U. S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly questioned Canada’s sovereignty.

Keith Richards’ Top Picks for Oct. 20, 2026

Published: October 20, 2026 at 1:17p.m. EDTKeith Richards, president and chief portfolio manager at ValueTrend Wealth Management, shares his outlook on Technical Analysis. Keith Richards, President, Chief Portfolio Manager, ValueTrend Wealth ManagementFocus: Technical Analysis Top Picks: State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF, WSP Global, BMO Equal Weight Global Base Metals Hedged to CAD Index ETF MARKET OUTLOOK:On my last BNN show in September, I called ValueTrend’s approach to the markets as the “buy anything but tech trade”. That, of course, was contrarian in light of the market’s sole focus on tech stocks at the time. It would appear that my call for buying “anything else but tech” is coming to fruition. A rotation into undervalued stocks has begun. My view has not changed. The top 10 stocks now hold roughly 40 per cent of the S&P 500 index. Sheer lunacy!!! Soon, nearly 50 per cent of the S&P will be a roll of the dice on AI. The passive share of the market – aka retail investors- hold Index ETF’s. Their exposure keeps climbing. Moreover, large institutional investors such as pension managers also hold significant passive index exposure.

Published: October 20, 2026 at 12:50p.m. EDTVassy Kapelos weighs in on U. S. President Donald Trump’s latest threat to ban Canadian jet brand Bombardier from selling to the U. S. market. WASHINGTON/MONTREAL -- U. S. President Donald Trump has dropped threats against Canadian jet maker Bombardier to ban it from the U. S. market and instead vowed to take “good care” of the company’s workers in Kansas. Trump’s threats in September against Bombardier became a political issue in Kansas, where it employs 1,500 workers in Wichita. The threatened ban prompted calls to the White House from Kansas lawmakers including Republican Senator Roger Marshall, who is facing a tough re-election bid. “We’re going to take care of Bombardier,” Trump told 12 News in Kansas, citing Marshall’s involvement. At a speech Monday, Trump said he would help Bombardier. “I’m going to be helping a certain air company get themselves straightened away... I’ll be helping them because I always viewed them as a Canadian company,” Trump said. “But now I find out they have a presence here, and we’re not hurting them if they’re in Kansas.

Protesting truck drivers put Italy’s pasta production at risk

Published: October 20, 2026 at 12:09p.m. EDTMILAN -- The production of Italian pasta is under threat as a protest by truck drivers in the south of the country over soaring fuel prices and the cost of living blocks deliveries to factories. There are also growing concerns about food supplies in Rome, as transport bottlenecks hamper deliveries from southern Italy to the capital. Italian agriculture lobby group Confagricoltura warned that producers in Sicily would have to destroy large quantities of perishable products if transportation did not resume. Pasta maker Rummo, based in the Campania region, said on Tuesday it had suspended production after running out of ingredients. Almost all major pasta producers in the neighboring region of Puglia, which together with Campania and Sicily form the heartland of Italy’s pasta production, are facing similar difficulties, CEO Cosimo Rummo told daily la Repubblica. “This means that most of Italy’s pasta production has ground to a halt, or is close to,” he said.
