The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) recently confirmed that a tornado passed south of Salluit, Que., on July 21. It is the northernmost tornado recorded in Canada since 1980. The tornado was observed at 10:15 a.m. ET near Spartan Lake by geologist Thoman Debruyne, who was in the area at the time and was able to capture footage of the twister as it occured. He later sent the footage in to the NTP for analysis. SEE ALSO: Climate versus weather: What's the difference? NTP has classified the brief tornado as an EF0, the lowest on the scale, as there were no visible signs of any damage to the surrounding area. What's remarkable about this, though, is how far north the tornado occurred. The Weather Network's meteorologists say this is the northernmost tornado to be recorded, not just in all of 2026, but since at least 1980.2026 had a remarkable tornado season across Canada, and this latest addition to the records is only further proof.

Playing the world’s northernmost golf course is unlike anything I’ve done before - The Globe and Mail

The first thing you notice in Ulukhaktok, NWT, is that everyone waves. Everyone. From passing ATVs. From trucks. From fishing boats and front yards. People wave at you and smile. They ask your name, then remember it for the rest of your trip. They wave because you’re in their community and people here have helped each other for thousands of winters. Open this photo in gallery:A raven flies away with a stolen golf ball clutched in its beak, which isn't uncommon here. I’m waving as well right now, but to a raven, and for separate reasons. I’m on the ninth hole of Ulukhaktok Golf Course competing in the 40th Billy Joss Open and this raven has just stolen my ball. I normally wouldn’t mind (it’s a free drop for raven theft), but the same bird just stole my previous ball, too. Someone recently found a raven nest sporting 200 golf balls. I drop another red Callaway to the ground. Around me, the tundra is green and yellow and dotted with hundreds of purple flowers called saxifrage that the community turns into jams and teas. The afternoon light is a muted lavender and it’s so quiet you only hear golf shots. I try a low runner from 40 yards to the astroturf green, finishing just short.

One giant clam contains a month‑by‑month diary of the Great Barrier Reef’s climate 200 years ago

Giant Clam (Tridacna gigas) from Jiigurru (Lizard Island Group). (Andy Lewis/Coral Sea Foundation)When you swim through the azure waters of the Great Barrier Reef, there is one entity on the seafloor that’s almost impossible to miss: the giant clam. Its huge, fluted shell frames a soft mantle shimmering with electric blue, green and gold. As the world’s largest living bivalve, Tridacna gigas can reach 1.2 metres, weigh more than 200 kilograms and live for over a century. Across their long lives, these clams record their daily life in their shells, creating an autobiographical shell diary. In our new research, we read one of these shell diaries to reconstruct month-by-month climate conditions at Jiigurru (also known as the Lizard Island Group), in the northern Great Barrier Reef. The shell’s story reveals that, before widespread industrial-era warming, Jiigurru’s summers were cooler than today, while winters were surprisingly similar. Stop bagging leaves: a farmer's guide to regenerative gardening

What is regenerative farming? How to start it in your own backyardThis fall, goldenrod is abundant and monarch butterflies have been passing through the Moonbeam Blooms Flower Farm in Cane Creek Valley, just south of Asheville, North Carolina.  Owner Jessica Stark won’t be bagging up the leaves, and she says you shouldn't either. Moonbeam Blooms is a regenerative flower farm, where the priority is keeping the soil healthy. “Regenerative farming is focused on really building a relationship with the land and the soil, and has some differences from conventional and even organic farming,” Stark explains. What is regenerative farming? While there’s no legal definition for regenerative farming, its core draws on the USDA’s principles for soil health:Disturb the soil as little as possibleKeep it coveredKeep living roots in the groundGrow a mix of plantsYou don’t need a farm to try it. Here’s how to start in your own yard. Swap plastic for mulchStark says to swap landscape fabric or plastic sheeting for mulch.
