Every day, police officers respond to reports of all sorts of events and nonevents, most of which never make the news. Here is a sampling of lesser-known — but no less noteworthy — incidents from police blotters in our communities. DANGEROUS ARTIFACTA World War I artillery shell was recently removed from a home in Paxton. On Oct. 14, the Paxton Fire Department worked with the State Police Bomb Squad and munitions experts from Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee to get the shell out of the residence safely. “The shell, which had been passed down as a family heirloom from the homeowner’s grandfather, was discovered to still pose a significant hazard despite its age,” local fire officials wrote. “While these historic military relics are fascinating pieces of history, many remain unstable even more than 100 years after they were manufactured. In this case, the shell, which was approximately 110 years old, presented a serious risk within the home and required specialized handling by trained explosive ordinance personnel.” The shell was taken to Devens, where it was going to be destroyed under controlled conditions.
