I live and work in Antarctica at 60 years old. From early wakeups to nightclubs, here's what a typical day is like. - Business Insider

The author is 60 and works in Antarctica in a seasonal gig. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with May Lee, a 60-year-old seasonal worker in Antarctica and former marketing and communications manager at HP. She worked at the McMurdo Station in 2025 and plans to return this year. It has been edited for length and clarity. After a layoff from HP in 2025, I decided to try something completely new and take a job in Antarctica as a seasonal supply technician at — at 59. My job, like the majority of jobs at McMurdo Station, followed what are known as "town hours," which are from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. While the schedule is pretty regimented in Antarctica, there are tons of activities to do, and the community is close-knit. My day begins at 6:30 a.m. I'm a night owl and don't like getting up early. I'm so accustomed to Silicon Valley norms and practices, where your day is very free-flowing. Here, it's a very rigorous schedule with no leeway whatsoever. I usually wake up at 6:30, ready by 7, and then get to work for 7:30 on the dot. Sometimes, if I want a lie-in, I'll skip breakfast.

Marty Sokol woke up on New Year’s Day this year exhausted from celebrating. Club Cobra, his bar in North Hollywood, is a fixture on the queer Latin nightlife scene in Los Angeles. When he logged into his clubs’ social media accounts to post about the night’s revelry, he noticed something weird. Club Cobra’s Instagram page had been taken down. He couldn’t figure out why. “I figured we could go through the proper channels to get it back,” Sokol said. He’d never posted anything racier than PG-level party fliers. After months of contacting Meta, Instagram’s parent company, he said he got no meaningful response. Pages for his other venue, Club Chico in Montebello, went down in May as well. It got stranger. A. I.-driven search engines listed his clubs as permanently closed. Longtime regulars texted him condolences. By June 1, he said, every single one of his club’s Instagram pages had been suspended, along with around a dozen pages from his staff and affiliated club promoters. “Your audience goes to look for you, and you are gone,” Sokol said. “For 15 years we developed hundreds of thousands of followers who we were able to build community with.

WIECHNIK: Smith got her immigration mandate — time to deliver

OpinionAlbertans have spoken on immigration reform, and the federal government can no longer ignore the demand for provincial control. Albertans weren’t ready to leave Canada, but they certainly appear willing to take back some semblance of control over their immigration policies.
