At the same time, a Conservative Party of Quebec suddenly materialized with 19 seats in the province’s national assembly. And the Parti Québécois went from three seats to a minority government.

The wisdom of crowds: Hub readers weigh in on Alberta as a state of mind
Michael Rupert Binnion argued on Oct. 12 that Alberta’s identity is a state of mind built on a shared future rather than a shared past, and that next week’s referendum is a choice between the status quo and lawful, negotiated change. Twenty readers weighed in. Read on for how The Hub community is thinking about this issue. The essay found a warm reception among Albertans in the comments, several of whom answered it with family histories of their own. William Dahmer traced his people from Germany through Bruce County, Norway, Minnesota, Ireland, and Scotland to homesteads cleared by hand. “But since they arrived here there was never any doubt that they were Albertans regardless of where they had come from,” he wrote. Where he parted from Binnion was on what forged that identity. It was “farm foreclosures by eastern banks in the Thirties and Lougheed’s fight with Trudeau’s National Energy Policy that helped define their western identity. Not any affinity for the United States.”
