Millions in cheese revenue lost as protest torpedoes Italy's buffalo mozzarella output
ROME -- A truckers' protest in southern Italy has halted the production of the famed buffalo mozzarella, causing an estimated loss of 3 million euros in just 24 hours as the milk cannot reach dairies in the Naples region and the finished cheese cannot reach customers, an official said. The weeklong strike by truck drivers over the high cost of diesel driven up by the Iran war has also blocked deliveries of other basic goods to supermarkets and left gas pumps empty in much of southern Italy. The government approved new tax breaks for truckers Thursday, but it was too early to tell whether they were enough to end the protest. The disruption is particularly damaging to buffalo mozzarella because the production of the protected cheese depends on a tightly timed supply chain. Buffaloes have to be milked regardless of whether dairies are operating, while production rules require that their milk be turned into mozzarella within 60 hours. Buffalo mozzarella is softer, creamier and richer than cow’s-milk mozzarella.

Charlie Kirk's family wants capital murder trial to start next year: Court filing
The family of conservative activist Charlie Kirk is asking that the trial of his alleged murderer begin next year -- sooner than the timelines suggested by the state and defense, according to new court filings. The suspect, Tyler Robinson, is due in court on Friday for a hearing that's expected to set a timeline for the capital murder case, including trial dates. The defense has asked that the capital trial start in the third quarter of 2029, arguing in a memo filed Wednesday that that timeline is consistent with other capital cases in the state. The defense anticipated that the trial could take six to seven months and would require "substantial time" for jury selection. The defense also noted they plan to undertake a venue study and, depending on the results, may request a change of venue for the trial. Tyler Robinson, who is accused of fatally shooting Charlie Kirk, sits beside defense attorney Kathryn Nester during a hearing in Provo, Utah, on Jan. 16, 2026. Bethany Baker/The Salt Lake Tribune via AP, FileIn the state's own filing, prosecutors said they anticipate the trial lasting 17 weeks and that they could be ready to start as soon as Oct. 4, 2027.
