Terrence O'Brien is the Verge’s weekend editor. He’s covered the tech industry for over 18 years and knows a thing or two about synths. Arturia is adding to its Freak line of proudly weird digital synths with the MiniFreak 49. Under the hood, it’s almost identical to the current MiniFreak, but it adds a number of more professional features and some interface improvements. The most noticeable change is that, rather than the MiniFreak’s 37 minikeys or the MicroFreak’s 25 “key” touchplate, the MiniFreak 49 has (as you may have guessed) 49 full-sized, semi-weighted keys. Though it’s somewhat disappointing that they feature only mono aftertouch instead of polyphonic aftertouch. It also trades the touchstrips of the other Freak instruments for proper aluminum pitch and mod wheels. The MiniFreak 49 also has a larger LCD than its siblings and dedicated controls for its two sound engines, so you don’t have to switch between them. Like the MiniFreak, it offers over 30 digital oscillator types, each with analog filters.

AVA Golf introduces AI assistant connectivity, giving golfers a new way to explore their performance data - The First Call Golf
(NEW YORK) – AVA Golf, the first platform designed to transform golfers’ performance data into personalized improvement plans, has incorporated a new feature that allows users to connect their AVA Golf accounts with compatible AI assistants, including Claude and ChatGPT. Golfers ask questions in their own words via text or voice about their rounds, practice sessions, performance trends, handicap history, bag composition and swing profiles to identify patterns in their games. Rather than navigating multiple data screens, they have the option to use an AI assistant – working in concert with AVA Golf’s MCP server – to review their individual statistics, understand where they are gaining or losing strokes and track their personal progressions over time. The accuracy of feedback golfers receive from AVA Golf is vastly better than that from larger AI assistants which aren’t specifically programmed to share golf insights and leave much counsel to guesswork. The new feature augments AVA Golf’s foundation of aggregating golfers’ data from simulators, launch monitors and on-course play across devices they use.

The non-gamer CEO racing to save Microsoft’s Xbox - Fortune
Asha Sharma returns from one of her walking meetings around Microsoft’s sprawling campus in Redmond, Wash., to her relatively new office in the Xbox building, reached via a 1,100-foot-long bridge from the main offices. It’s a brisk early September afternoon, and Sharma is wading through the next series of changes she’ll make at the legacy gaming business. There are more layoffs to complete and more studios to consolidate. Much is still new for Sharma, the 38-year-old executive whom Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in February put in charge of turning around one of entertainment’s biggest brands. Her office, adorned with Xbox controllers, framed Halo game discs, and a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater skateboard, at first seems like an odd fit for an executive who famously had zero past video game experience.
