Scientists make AI play Battleship to help it do science better - Scientific American
AI models and people played “collaborative” Battleship to test strategies for efficiently solving problemsBy Peter Hall edited by Sarah Lewin Frasier Thomas FuchsIf artificial intelligence is going to revolutionize the way science is done, as many of the frontier AI laboratories hope, it needs to master board games first. That’s the lesson from a recent study of AI models’ decision-making skills, tested with the game Battleship. The goal was to find ways for models to be more careful with limited resources: “cheap interventions” for information seeking, as research scientist Valerio Pepe puts it. Science requires lots of decisions—researchers must choose which hypotheses to pursue and which simulations to run. The choices will determine which path to follow when resources for experiments are limited. “You can get only so much data because getting data is either expensive or time-consuming,” says Pepe, who led work on the project before joining OpenAI.

Palestinian families displaced as Israeli forces demolish Hebron homes, local officials say - BBC
More than 200 families have been displaced, Palestinian officials sayThe Israeli military has launched a sweeping crackdown in the occupied West Bank, demolishing homes and businesses in the city of Hebron and displacing hundreds of families, according to local officials. Footage shared online showed destruction caused by Israeli bulldozers, with at least one whole street appearing to have been flattened. The military has also cordoned off the city, heavily restricting the movement of its 200,000 residents. The operation was announced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday, in response to the killing of two Israeli soldiers by two Palestinian gunmen in an attack on a checkpoint. Three other Israeli soldiers were injured, and the gunmen were also killed. Netanyahu said on Friday that buildings around the site of the attack and the neighbourhoods that the two gunmen were from would be "destroyed". Hebron's Mayor Youssef al-Jaabari said more than 1,000 people had been displaced by the operation, which centred on the Ein Deir Baha and Farsh al-Hawa neighbourhoods, and targeted homes, businesses, industrial sites and infrastructure.
