Before anyone else says it, yes, there ain’t no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism, blah blah blah. Major league sports owners have basically always been hella rich foos with questionable ambitions, to say the least. The current moment feels different, however. Today, there are many plausible arguments being made about the insane frequency of professional sports teams and leagues being converted into tax havens, additional tools for hedge funds, venture capital, and private equity, and instruments of political soft power. Homecoming havoc as Western holds on for ugly win - The Gazette • Western University's Newspaper
The Mustangs took the field against the Marauders on a gorgeous September afternoon, but despite Western’s win, the sights on the field were anything but pretty. The Western University Mustangs improved to 4–0 on the season Saturday, holding off a previously unbeaten McMaster University Marauders squad for a 35–28 win in a game that featured interceptions, cramps and several special teams errors. Over 14,000 fans — according to Mustangs head coach Michael Faulds — were in the stands for the famous Homecoming fixture when Western’s first drive stalled at midfield and McMaster jumped ahead to an early 3–0 lead from a field goal shortly thereafter. Facing a McMaster defence that had given up the fewest points in the Ontario University Athletics coming into the game, Western came up empty on their second drive as well. But a well-placed punt by third-year punter Oliver Griffiths led to an intentional safety by the Marauders due to poor field position. By the time the Western faithful actually had something to cheer about, 15 minutes had come and gone.
